Default In a jam, need some advice....

My parents are down in Florida with their '09 TDI.. Oldman is just about to cross the 16,000km OCI... The drive home is 3,000kms... Now here's the issue.

I know that used oil (to a point) protects much better then new oil. The last thing I want to do is tell him to get it changed, then put a whole bunch of wear and tear on the CBEA.. So I guess there are 2 choices..

1. Over run the first OCI by 3000km's (1900miles) and change the oil when he gets home.. He also has a bottle of VW507 in the car for topups..

2. Get the oil changed, drive 3000km's home on fresh oil (I'm not a fan of this). This also adds to the concern because of the local dealers.. Personally I wouldn't let them touch the car. If he does this, he'll purchase the oil (dealer sourced) and get a 3rd party to swap it out. (QLube, whatever)...

Last thing I need is him driving 3000kms home with the wrong oil in the car...

Why don't you get your Dad to call one of these trusted guru's and ask them? If it were me, I'd likely change the oil but only if it was myself or a trusted person.

Overdrive the oil. It is a long-life oil which in Europe is usually run for 20k-25k OCI. So no problems here.

That's what I'm thinking we'll do...

Would not changing the oil as per VW recommendations be a violation of the warranty? If so problems may experienced "down the road".

How is VW supposed to know when the oil was changed? I don't need to get it changed at the dealer in order to maintain my warranty...

Bill, why don't you coordinate a stop for them at Keith's house in Tampa on their way home. I think you'd want to maintain the prescribed drain interval so you don't have any warranty issues.

Actually, in Canada, you just about have to get the oil changed at a "licensed" facility - with a receipt showing the type of oil and the milage - in order to keep from having headaches if you ever need warranty coverage... (no Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act up here...) I'd go to a VW dealership and make sure they use the correct fluid...

I'm afraid that if you ever need warranty service, you're in for a tough time unless you're very friendly with your local dealer, have some legal training, or have access to recognised experts who would be willing to go on the record and possibly testify on your behalf... VW has an outstanding (?) reputation when it comes to denying coverage... (not much different from other manufacturers, come to think about it...)

What I don't understand is why you are worried about changing the oil now. I don't see the difference between him getting the oil changed and driving home, and driving home and then changing the oil.
By all means, I get the fear about having someone mess up the oil change.

Guess things have changed since i was in the industry. Back then, anything and everything was a warranty job if the vehicle was within the warranty period. I remember one guy coming in for an engine problem. The vehicle still had the original oil filter from the factory, 3 years later?? Warranty covered. Dealer wanted the money from warranty jobs that he would otherwise not get, so he pushed it through.
