How is your TDI not happy in traffic?

Chicago has some pretty bad traffic and the two out of three TDIs that I owned and drove in traffic did just fine. ALH with a stick and the CBEA with a DSG.

<30mpg = not happy in traffic.
Not sure how the DPF will handle the potential for excess soot with so much idling.
I know it's designed for regen when necessary, but it's my understanding that small diesels in general are happier on the highway.
Just my opinion...except for the lousy mileage.
