How-To R&R Advance Solenoid / N108 / Cold Start Valve

If your car exibits these symptoms your advance solenoid is probably dead.

• In VAGcom; timing is off the chart, pegged at 255 regardless of coolant or fuel temp.
• Low power – the ECU reduces fueling to prevent engine damage.
• Loud diesel clatter.
• Poor fuel efficiency.
• You may also be getting either an N108 open short code, or an needle lift sensor code

This is how you replace it. At this point, I don't know of anyone retailing this part, although there are many in the used market. Edit the PN for this is 028906283P or M

The collective VE portion of the membership sees these from time to time, but they're not super obvious unless you've seen 'em before. It's a good alternative to the blanket - "you need a new pump" answer.

is there a test to show this is the issue before i replace??
