We can select 505.00, ACEA, and (last) API CD/CF for minimum warranty service requirements.
That should be VW 505.00 (or better), ACEA B3/B4, or API CH-4 (or better).

We have more choices for 2003 and earlier TDIs, as we aren't tied specifically to 505.00 for warranty the way the PD owners are. We can select 505.00, ACEA, and (last) API CD/CF for minimum warranty service requirements. Most of the owner's manuals for the earlier cars don't even list a VW spec in the front oil section you have to jump to the back for the 'driving in Europe' section. The main requirements are still the 5W-40 viscosity recommendation and the synthetic requirement.

Andy
At least in my 2002 owner's manual, instead of CD/CF, it says CF-4/CG-4

You mean 505.01 for the PDs..not 505.00 :D

Nope - I ment it as written.

I understand that there's been a lot of focus on the PD+505.01=warranty issue, but that is not the requirement for earlier cars.

The owners manuals in the earlier cars give an API level - not a VW spec - until you flip to the back under 'driving in Europe'. The US warranty has not been tied to a specific VW oil spec until the PDs and 505.01.

I think I get it.

I think your post should say "VE owners are not tied to 505.00 like the PD owners are tied to 505.01" so folks don't think PDs are tied 505.00. Your post could be interpritted that way (I did) :D

Yes that 5W30 is some very good oil - but Amsoil would not rec this for your 06.

This is the only motor oil that Amsoil would recommend for your 2006 Jetta TDI:
http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/afl.aspx

The Series 3000 5w30 is, by all accounts, an excellent motor oil. And suitable for 2003-and-earlier TDIs. But not for yours.

Amsoils recommendation for this oil in a light duty diesel (car or pickup) is:

25k/1 yr under normal conditions, ie mainly highway driving
15k/1 yr under severe service conditions.

Based on the data I've seen these are very doable...

Note that the Amsoil EAO oil filter can be used for these same intervals.

AMSOil is the best stuff I have used, I have a 2002 Jetta TDI and I use the
5W-30 3000 Series that meets VW spec 502.00, your is a different VW spec
VW 505.00, 505.01.

I beilieve good oil is engine insurance, so don't skimp with cheap oil and your engine should last quite a long time.
I have been using AMSOil in my Jetta since I bought it, now with 100,000
miles on it and it purrs.

I recently did the timing belt change and got a chance to see the camshaft, it shows little wear as compared to another Jetta next to mine
in the Dealership shop (about the same mileage) and it had much more wear, they were using the Castrol garbage recommeneded (pushed) by the Dealership, it doesn't meet the VW spec so they tell you to change it every 5000 miles, with AMSOil I can go the full 10,000 per the manual.

What ever brand of good oil you choose to put in your engine, make it a high quality true synthetic oil, all the info can be found here on this site.

Which Castrol junk is pushed by the dealer?

If the motor is a pre-PD..Castrol Syntec 5w40 is what the dealer probably uses. Meets VW 505.00.

If it's a PD, then Castrol TXT, meeting 505.01 is what the dealer should be providing.

Which EAO filter right for my 98 Jetta TDI 1Z engine? The amsoil website does not say. It directs to a WIX filter.

There is not a"eao" offered for a 06 jetta.according to the book they offer:
engine code BEW-#57210 wix oil filter
engine code BRW-#57083 wix oil filter
the differneces are the #57083 has a extended plastic section with a small o-ring were the #57210 does not

Non-PD TDI: Amsoil DEO/5w-40 or Elf Excellium Full-Tech 0W-30

Folks,

I have the following:

* Car: 2002 Golf w/ 55K miles
* Miles: Approx. 10,000 miles/year with 70% city driving
* Climate: moderate winters + hot summers (SE Texas)

I am tempted to use the Elf Excellium Full-Tech 0W-30 to hopefully improve my milage (around 40 MPG right now w/ 5 sp.). On the other hand I have been using Amsoil oils so far on my Golf (I am happy so far) and it looks like the Amsoil DEO/5w-40 will be good for protecting the engine (not so thin + better additives).

Any thoughts on the cost/benefit aspects? Thanks for your feedback.

Both are good, non-pd oils. Either is fine for year-round use. Which product is easiest for you to acquire?

Probably the Amsoil (cheaper too). The question is: would I get a little bit better milage (1% improvement or so) with the Elf 0W-30 with the same amount of protection of the engine year around?

The ELF will give better mileage, it has much stronger detergent, with only 10k a year, no extreme cold. GO DEO

The folks at ELF told me to anticipate 2 - 4% gain in fuel economy over a traditional 5W40. While the FULL TECH enjoys the same CRV technology, you'll need to recall that it's a thick 0W30 as it is also certified against MBz's newer diesel auto standard and they demand a higher HT/HS than VW. Again, this is a thick 0W30. CRV is a thin 0W30.

YMMV :)

Voa Deo

Here's a VOA on AMSOIL's new 5W-40 heavy duty diesel oil. Please note that this report contains two 5W-40 VOAs. Lab 232635 is DEO, The earlier lab is for the reformulated AFL.
