how long is the warranty on emission systems components for these cars (2012 passat tdi family)? what components are covered?

i heard someone at the dealership mention a warranty period of 8 years/80K miles for emission system components. wondering if that's true and what's covered.

I would lay that task on your sales associate and through email, if possible. That way you have something other than a phone conversation to refer back to. You can also do the same with VW Customer Care via this address: vwcustomercare@vw.com

Look in the Booklets that were provided to you. In addition to the regular Owner's Manual there is a separate "USA Warranty and Maintenance" booklet. In there you will find more than you ever wanted to know about these warranties. Since you live in Oregon it even gets more confusing since you are also covered by California's emission requirements.

In very general terms, there are two types of these warranties. Some components are covered for 2 years and 24K miles and others are covered for 8 years and 80K miles. No need trying to list what's covered here since they are found in your warranty booklets.

Looks like 2 years, 24K miles covers fuel tank, fuel system, injections system including injection pump, exhaust system including turbo and cat, EGR, intake system, ignition system, etc.

8 years, 80k miles only covers, catalytic converter, particulate filter, ECM and OBD. In NJ you're not required to take an emissions test until the 5th year, so basically only thos last few items are covered.

Engine and powertrain are 5 year 60K miles, but don't appear to cover fuel or injection systems. Not sure.

Looks like the same coverage for the past couple of years, at least:

For 8 Years or 80,000 miles
If the vehicle has been in use for more than 24 months or 24,000 miles, but less than 8 years or
80,000 miles, whichever occurs first, your Volkswagen dealer will repair or replace free of charge the
following major emission control components only:
Catalytic Converter and Diesel Particulate Filter
 Engine Electronic Control Module
 On Board Diagnostic Device

fuel injectors, fuel injection units and fuel altitude compensator sensor, bars or rails for EFI or TBI systems, mixture settings on sealed fuel mixture control solenoid, diaphragm or other systems, fuel metering components that achieve closed/other feedback control sensors/loop operation switches and valves

seems like a very comprehensive list.

Strange EGR not listed, as emissions is its sole purpose. May want to double-check that.
According to the EPA website, EGR systems good for only 2yr 24K.

which is great because if the EGR system goes TU at 36K, and hoses your DPF or SCR, VW doesn't have to warranty any of it, because you didn't maintaine the car to design spec.

(now the chances of a dealer sticking it to you that way is pretty slim but the feds are in agreement, you need to maintain your car per design spec for warranty out to 80K, same thing as if asking VW to replace your engine at 50K becuse you hadn't checked or changed the oil since 30K)

How so? Free maintenance by dealer till 36k so they have maintained it the whole time. How would they be able to say you didn't maintain it properly without implicating themselves?

Because it's outside the warranty period, and isn't covered by the 60K powertrain warranty. If it fails at 35K, then it'd be VW's bill to pick up.

But with, all the P0401 codes the CJAA engines have been getting and VW dealers tossing EGR filters, and new DPF to attempt to fix seems like they are being kind an expanding what the the EPA is holding them too.

2012 Passat TDI Emissions 8/80 warranty

2012 Passat TDI was Cert used VW dealer sold and has 4K to go before 1st oil change on my watch. It throws a check engine light. VW Service codes it as an ECM issue. Car has <30K total miles & has additional extended warranty. Web info & this site all peg this as a covered Fed 8/80 Emssions warranty issue. VW locally and Natl says the ECM is covered, but they also now maintain that this failure is not warrantied.
If the Web Resources all concur, VW concurred and this is a Fed mandate -how could they deny coverage:confused:?
I appealed on that basis and await the promised 24 hour reply turnaround. If not covered it's a $500 part and $250 labor job that allegedly is not a Platinum Warranty covered item either:eek:
How are different outcomes possible or reasonable if the part is Emissions mandated per the Fed 8yr/80K mi requirements? What would then make the ECM Warranty replaceable under any circumstances?
I will post further after the appeal verdict is in.

Sometimes you have to keep pushing the issue to get satisfaction. Educate yourself and keep pushing. They like to say no and have you just go away if possible. Don't be a quitter.
