In case anyone is interested in buying loose electrical terminals to make up harnesses etc I have found this place in England that has most in stock:

These terminals apply mainly to Passat 3B and Golf IV style contacts.

Amended link:

http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/VWP-onlinestore/home/homepage.php

Go to:
"Terminals"
"Non Insulated Terminals"
"Terminals for Mouldings"

I have used them a number of times and can recommend them.

Here is a list of their direct equivalent terminals to replace the VW repair wires that are the most commonly used:

vw repair wire 000979131 = Terminal 3-8020 (used on w8 light; mini ISO connectors on MFD; oil sensor etc)

000979133 = 3-7209 (most terminals on car 1.0mm wire)

000979225 = 3-7212 (same as 000979133 but for 2.5mm wire)

000979132 = 3-8010 (male pin for 000979131 above)

0001979129 = 3-8030 (male pin for 000979133 above)

000979103 = 3-8060 (e.g. male roof harness connector for W8 light adapter)

000979227 = 3-2050 (large female pins on dash switches etc)

If you are looking for the correct "furry" tape that VW use, it is available at your local VW dealer under Part number 000 979 950 ( they describe it as "webbing adhesive tape")

High temperature harness tape for engine bay: use BMW tape (same as the VW tape used on newer cars but I cannot find a VW number for it):-

BMW Part number 61 13 6 902588

Terminals required for relay plate:

Repair wire for pin 1, 3, 7 and 9 (smallest terminal) in relay plate:
1.0mm 000 979 133 (3-7209)
2.5mm 000 979 225 (3-7212)
Repair wire for pin 2, 5 and 8 (medium terminal) in relay plate:
1.0mm 000 979 135
2.5mm 000 979 227 (3-2050)
6.0mm 000 979 407
Repair wire for pin 4 and 6 (largest terminal) in relay plate:
1.0mm 000 979 114 (3-7000) Also available from Porsche with part number 999 650 103 12
2.5mm 000 979 212

6.0mm 000 979 405

I cannot find anyone who has the very small 000979009 equivalent for cluster wires.

Please let me know a source if anyone finds one!

Now you can make your own harnesses like factory without all the extra splices required if you use the VW repair wire!

Good find! Thanks for posting this!

I've found that, at least here in the States, that a visit to a U-Pull-It type junk yard with a pair of wire cutters under a dash can yield double fist-fulls of 'repair wires' for cheap. Not as nice as your source for terminals, but an inexpensive source nonetheless.

Sorry about that link.

Main link is

http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/VWP-onlinestore/home/homepage.php

Go to:
"Terminals"
"Non Insulated Terminals"
"Terminals for Mouldings"

I forgot to mention, they also sell multicoloured wire strands so you can even match the factory wiring colours.

There is another place in America that may be cheaper:

http://www.masterdistributors.com/

(Onlinecomponents.com)

I have also bought terminals from them but you need to know the precise AMP Tyco part number

The only one I have found was:

http://www.masterdistributors.com/ordering/productdetail.cfm?pr=2372191

which is the "gold plated" version = 000979131A (which I am using for the oil sensor plug).

I had to buy 100 to get the 3 I wanted, so if anyone is looking for some of these...PM me.

Uh... hmm... Well, none...
How are you crimping the terminals - do you have a proper die, or doing it by hand? Just wondering if doing it by hand (i.e. needlenose pliers?) is sufficient.

I bought a handheld crimper, but you need to find the right type that is designed to curl these bare terminals over properly.

I bought a Utilux 147A/1 -"Uninsulated terminal crimp tool":

It looks like this :

One side of jaw is " ( " shaped and the other is " 3 " shaped so it rolls the two sides of the terminal in like the factory ones.

Looks totally factory when you are finished.

How do you know what P/N's to order from the Master site?

I need a bunch of terminals:

Regular radio/light switch style
The "double" of those link in the back of the hazards switch
Some female "box" pins for the cluster
And a hand full of the other size pins (the smaller one that still look like the radio pins, etc)

Any help would be appreciated!

Sorry, I don't know the AMP/TYCO numbers at all.

That's why I get them from UK.:)

Plus you don't have to order a minimum number of connectors either from them.

Unless you can download a TYCO catalogue and actually measure the connector you have and find a match in the catalogue.

That's how I found the correct gold plated 000979131A equivalent connector.

-000979133 (3-7209) and
-000979129 (3-8030)
Which are apparently among other uses headlight connector terminals.
Anybody have them near or have a good place to buy them ?
VWP gives me a 404 error...
Thanks

Hard to tell if those are the correct pins for the instrument cluster, there are a few that look like them, but not the actual one that fits. A bit of a trained eye is needed..... That pic looks like a instrument cluster terminal, but really need to see it first hand to be sure.

Now to get instrument cluster terminals, just crack open green terminal housing of an instrument cluster housing.... BEHOLD:

There are some blanks in the blue terminal housing as well. Now the catch is that they are IDC (Insulation Displacement Crimp). But if one is careful, you can use the Ideal "Crimpmaster" with the Ideal No. 30-599 dies to crimp your own:

I open up the tail IDC barbs so that the wire can drop into the terminal freely, to the crimp with the 30-599 dies, then use a small pair of needle nose pliers to crimp around the insulation. The terminal will deform some but can is easy to straighten back out by hand.

IMHO, this makes for a good crimp, but not as good as what you get across the parts counter with a pre-crimped terminal.

These terminals are the earlier 000 979 018 style. I agree, they are very tricky to crimp satisfactorily without the correct tool. VW kindly throw some extra blanks in the connector for you.

Unfortunately when they changed the cluster plugs slightly to the later style with 000 979 009 pins, they did not.

I have located some TYCO connectors in their catalogue that should be the correct cluster/Quadlock pins (= 000 979 009).

I have ordered some from onlinecomponents and I'll post up the applicable part numbers, if they are indeed correct.;)

Received my onlinecomponents items today.....

Success! ;)

These are the equivalent part numbers:

VW repair wire = 000 979 009

TYCO equivalent for 0.2 -0.5mm wire:

962885-1 "Tin plated" - "for use with single wire sealing system" (i.e. the tang on the end of the terminal is slightly longer to enable you to crimp one of those waterproof VW plug seals to the end of it)

TYCO equivalent for 0.5 -0.75mm wire:

963715-1 "Tin plated" - for use in standard receptacle without a waterproof seal

VW repair wire = 000 979 009 A (Gold plated)

TYCO equivalent for 0.2 -0.5mm wire:

962885-5 "Gold plated" - "for use with single wire sealing system"

The ones "for use with single wire sealing system" don't fit into the cluster pins because the end of the crimp is bigger to put a rubber seal in.

I also ordered some male pins:

VW repair wire 000 979 012

TYCO equivalent for 0.2 -0.5mm wire:

1-928918-1 "Tin plated" - "for use with single wire sealing system"

These are the male quadlock style pins that you would plug into the above female 009 pins

There are a few other variations of the above pins in the catalogue but none were in stock ready to ship straight away.

Now I can make up my harnesses without all those extra repair wire splices.

Hello Graeme,

Where did you order the terminals, Is it possible to order only 20 parts of each or there is a minimum quantity that should be ordered ?

Thanks,
Silviu

I just get them from UK supplier usually - no minimum quantity.

Online components in US sell odd lots too as well for some of them (some require large amounts but some don't
