Audi yet again proved "Vorsprung durch Technik” on the race track by taking the first victory for a diesel powered sportscar at the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours. The revolutionary diesel technology has now also triumphed in competition with Formula 1 and other motorsport categories: A panel of experts from the British specialist magazine "Race Engine Technology” voted the 650 hp V12 TDI engine from the Audi R10 TDI as "Race Engine of the Year 2006” and "Alternative Race Engine of the Year”.

On behalf of AUDI AG, Ulrich Baretzky accepted the "Race Engine of the Year” trophy at the Professional MotorSport World Expo in Cologne. The Head of Engine Technology at Audi Sport was also awarded the title "Design Engineer of the Year 2006” at the international motorsport exhibition.

The Audi R10 TDI is unbeaten since making its debut at the 12 Hours of Sebring last March. The revolutionary diesel sportscar started eight races and took the checkered flag as winner on each occasion - impressive proof of the efficiency of Audi TDI Power.

What else is there to say? Why would anyone want a gasser?

That class of racing is super expensive no matter how you slice it. Audi uses this class to showcase new technologies, and they've done very well first with FSI and now this.

True, but the great thing about Le Mans racing is that more of the technology trickles down to production as compared to Formula 1 and other types of racing.

Really? I'm pretty happy with the launch control on my Golf.

I was unaware of any competition between F1 and the R10s. If the R10s stomped on an F1 car or cars, that's pretty impressive.

to the TDI power!

Seeing these results, PSA (Peugeot/Citroën) is kicking itself for not building a race-spec HDi sooner.
Should be happening this coming season, according to Peugeot.

It is a great looking engine and car. The sound that it makes is unbelievable too. When I went to the Grand Prix of Utah to watch it, I would have to cover my ears as the Porsche went by, but the R10 was amazingly quiet and sounded more like a low-humming jet than a car. I also went to the Audi Stars and Cars event to see it more up close and personal as well as to meet Emanuele Pirro and Frank Biela. The car is quite the piece of work, as is Emanuele Pirro! (the guy is hilarious!)

Here's some pics from the event: http://twowheelphotos.blogspot.com/2006_07_01_archive.html

BTW, here's a video clip of both R10's at the GP of Utah: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5696362042921964525&hl=en
They were doing about 70 mph through that 90 degree corner right into the s-curves before the long straight away.
And here's one of theh DHL Porsche in the s-curves just for comparison: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8504062891884173806&hl=en

And one last one that I did NOT take, but I found it on audizine.com and it has better sound than mine does I think. http://s11.photobucket.com/albums/a176/cbass94/?action=view&current=r10clip1.flv (Turn up the volume for this one, it's quieter)

It may be a race engine, but it'd look GREAT in my Jetta!
LOL. You'd have to take out the seats and sit on the engine.
