With all the concerns about Alternator pulleys breaking, I decided to replace mine on my 2000 Jetta TDI 118,000 miles. When I went to order a new pulley from 1stVWparts.com they asked for the Alternator Part Number. I told them it is Bosch 120amp Part# 028 903 028E. They told me I needed Pulley #028 903 119J for $131.07 in place of the common Part #022 903 119C at $52. They also said that the #022 903 119C may work. Has anyone else run into this confusion? On every other website I looked at they only list one pulley.

So Bruce what is the 028E for? Or is the 119C and 028E completely interchangeable?

Tim, the 028 903 028E is the original part number for the alternator. Part number has changed to 038 903 018B. ETKA show it as a 120 amp Bosch alternator.

Based on the part number, ETKA says the correct alternator pulley is a 022 903 119 A or T. A is the only free-wheeling pulley of the two. That part number has been changed to a suffix C for the "improved" part.

If you go to the TDI101 forum under "How To", there are two threads on how to replace the Alternator Pulley. There are some discussions on the advantage of the "Free Wheeling" pulley.

Bruce:
You mention that the correct alternator pulley is 028 903 119A updated to 028 903 119C. Did you mean 022 903 119C.
