Flexible Service Interval Retrofit?

So some of our european friends have a sensor at the bottom of the oil pan. This sensor enables instrument clusters that are so equipped to display flexible service interval reminders, much like that of most BMW's. Depending upon oil stress, temperature, etc, it tells us whats going on in the engine. I have a brand new crate motor in my garage right now thats going in tomarrow. I'd like to firgure out how to retrofit this into my car. Since I swapped the european instrument cluster, my car always says "oil sensor workshop" because I don't have this sensor, now I do and I wanna hook it all up. Any help or info is appreciated. Thanks

I know one person who is working on getting the sensor and wiring it up. You must have something programed wrong on your euro cluster to get that message. ALL of the one,s i have installed do not say that.

I know about the instrument cluster deal, I changed it since then, but I know it has the capability because when I first got it it had the error message.

All the A4 instrument clusters can display the service interval. Even the standard cluster installed for North America.

The fourth digit of the cluster code enables/disables this feature. '0' = fixed service interval and no sensor. '1' = flexible service interval with sensor. '2' = fixed service interval with sensor. '3' = no service interval (standard US/Canada).

(edited because I ran out human digits (fingers) counting the numerical digits as is pointed out later in this thread)

Oil pan with hole for using the sensor is 038 103 603 N.
The sensor is 1J0 907 660 B.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I already have a TDI engine that is not US spec sitting on a stand in my garage with the sensor and pan. I just need to know where to find the pinouts and how to wire the sensor to the ECU or instrument cluster.

Partial answer: The Bentley says instrument cluster green connector pin 18 is the "oil temperature and oil level warning signals".

I seem to recall someone once posting that there is already an unused connector in the wiring harness for it. If I didn't have the steel skid plate on, I'd take a look.

Go to the upgrade section, look up the MFA cluster install and find PTC's post of pin-outs for the cluster. He lists all of them.

This is from the 15 page MFA cluster thread...

Just came across this topic on vortex:
Service Interval Reminder

Basically enable service interval on US/Canada cars:
</font><blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">quote:</font><hr /><font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif"> Finaly after research, I was able to setup service reminder on US spec cluster. I think is very useful futer, no idea why is disabled on US cars. Anybody with VAG-COM can do that, by changing coding in your cluster. This only can work on cars with CAN BUS build from 05.00. for example US Golf cluster coding is 07232 so you have to replace 4-th digit (3 with 0 as for cars with fixed service intervals without oil/temp. sender), after this go to:
1. channel 43 in Instrument Cluster (upper limit for distance to next inspection step size is 1000 km, by default 15000 km=9400 miles)
2. channel 44 is upper limit for time to next inspection in days, step size is 1 day by default 365
3. channel 40 is distance traveled since last inspection, step in 100km (ex. 5200 km= 052)
4. channel 41 is time elapsed since the last inspection, step 1 day
First the channels 43 and 44 must be adapted, because the values of channels 40 and 41 may not be greater than the upper limits of channels 43 and 44. Adaptation must be done using kilometers (1 mile equates to approx. 1.609 km )
To reset service interval go to Instrument Cluster Adaptation channel 2 enter 0 and save.
Service Reminder will display on your cluster (in place of the curent odo display, just fo couple sec.)after certain milleage(usualy 2000 miles or 3200km or time set in channel 43 and 44, as Service in _____ and it will countdown every 100 miles(km), when you turn your ignition ON.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">
Yes this will work on euro cars as well, but in euro cars you have couple options, depends if your car is equipd with oil/temp. sender then you have to follow this:
0 is for vehicles with fixed service intervals without oil/temp. sender
1 is for vehicles with flexible service intervals with oil/temp. sender
2 is for vehicles with fixed service intervals with oil/temp. sender
3 is for vehicles without service interval display (USA, Canada)
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">For testing:
try this go to channel 40 enter 119 as 11900 km from last inspection, then when you turn you ignition Service in 3200 should appear in place of the odometer just for couple sec. I just forgot to mention cluster is counting mileage in a backgroung, until 2000 miles or 3200 km(dependts of country code) before due date or distance to the next service, and is decreasing this distance on display every 100 miles or km. Starting from 3200 km to 0 so you have time to prepare.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Thanks for tdi28 over on vortex. I tried on my Euro cluster and it works.
So I would like to share this information on the topic for a complete reference.

COOL, thanks guys. Anyone have pinouts on the sensor itself? I've searched through that thread to no avail... I'll give hrovje a ring...

Since I haven't seen one (yet) nor do I have the wiring diagram (yet), can you tell us what the color of the wires are? Post a pic? Colors can be clues to the purpose. For example, solid brown is always ground and solid black is always power (except at the battery cables, of course).

Ours Lito, PeterV and any other of the ones i have programed already have the 0 inplace , i think most due because the EURO cluster would not take any other number. Mine went off last week showing reminder in 1900 miles. I turned it off right away I think i can remember to change my oil every 10000 miles without the car telling me to, But have thought about installing the oil senser for the benafits it gives.

You know what Jerry, That's what I like about you... you're willing to help me, even though you don't agree or don't want the same MOD or feature.

I first have to get SH*T from you, a lecture, then the help
Just like an older brother

OK I'm interested...How much?

The thing that caught my attention was the oil level warning. With me getting ready to install an oil cooler and a bypass filter it'll be a extra piece of mind for all the additional lenghts of oil hose and fittings.

I know that VW's in europe can go up to about 20K miles before changing the oil, but that HAS to be with a bypass filter. Personally, I'll install the bypass filter and still change the oil every 10K miles. Over the years, it'll be peanuts compared to buying a new car.

Thanks Glen,

There are a few of us working on this mod. You just gave us the LAST piece.

Wyseguy, can you take pics of your sensor install?

I've found the parts, just curious to see it installed.

I just looked (with a mirror) and saw it. It's below the snorkel and below and to the left of the battery. I think pulling the battery is the best way to get to it, and it looks very obvious where it is.

Last night I was running the 'output' tests on my new cluster and noticed that the oil light has two colors, red and green(yellow). could one color be for pressure and the other for level?

Do we have a picture of what this sensor looks like?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Neat! I was wondering exactly what this sensor would do for us. Before I go drilling in my oil pan and after I have the cluster working, I'll try to rig a "dry run" on the sensor to see what comes up on the cluster. By the way, I think this thing measures temperature and level, not pressure. But, we're still not 100% sure. Stay tuned...

You are correct, sir! There is a separate pressure sensor.

I'll check the output test again and pay more attention to what the Vagcom says.
