Hey fellow tdi'ers.
I have a 99 beetle 1.9 tdi. I recently lost all gears while driving.
After thinking it was a broken cable then an adjustment.
After some careful tear down I found out the "female" spline metal piece that is attached to the counter weight was worn. Now I was able to use a 1/2" washer to make temporarily usable. It needs replacing and I have no idea what the part number or even name is. Anyone that can help I appreciate it. Thanks

I take it you mean number 8 in this pic?

What's your gearbox code?

No 8 is the shaft that goes into the tranny. It's the piece of like 1/16" metal maybe 2 inches by 1 inch. It slips over the splines on #8. The counter weight is bolted to it.

In the trunk, near the spare tire location, I believe. It gives engine code, transmission code, and paint color. It's' a little sticker. Could be wrong, that's where I remember it being.

What linkage is in the new beetle? Is it the standard Mk4 affair?

Trans code ebj. Like I said its that plate that the counter weight bolts to that fits over the splined shaft. Thanks for the location metalhead.

That pic is all I can find on the 99 beetle, if anyone can tell me which number is the correct part I can give you the part number.

Is there any pics that show the counter weight out there? I may have to attempt to make my own piece. Matching the splines would be the hardest part.

Ok after exhaustive google searches. I believe I found the part. Gearshift lever pn 1j0711051b? Thanks for everyone's input. It helped me get into the right search parameters.

Ah yeh, is that #45 in this pic?

I've been looking at gearbox end but vagcat is written in an odd way.

Yeah seatman. 45 is exactly the part. Seems about $43-45 for the part. Shockingly the dealer is only $45. Next day availability. Thanks for all the help.

Have you got any transmission repair shops nearby? We have one that has loads of second hand parts in perfect condition.

Mind you I don't suppose $45 is all that pricey lol

Yeah seatman for what it is 45 is reasonable. If it was more like 100 I would attempt to make my own. I'm a welder with water jet capabilities. Especially from the dealer I have no problem with the price. Thanks for all the help though. Maybe one day I can return the help!
