Hi All,

I have a '01 Golf 1.9L TDI that threw a P0380 code two days ago. Upon diagnosing the glow plugs, I found the left most glowplug blown as the ohms resistance was infinte, where all of my other glow plugs ( including the coolant plugs ) measure between .5 to .7 ohms.

My question is about the replacement of the burnt glow plug. Some people are telling me to replace all 4 engine glow plugs, others tell me that replacing just the one glow plug is alright, so long as I have the same brand.

I find the dealer here in Maple Ridge, BC wants $46.82/each, and Lordco wants $32.59 for Bosch, and $31.00 for Autolite brands. Another shop only sells BRU for approx $20/ea. Is there a recommended brand?

Is there a rule of thumb to replacing burnt out glow plugs that I should be following here?

Thanks for your assistance, and the code from the VAG-COM is pasted below.

there's no rule of thumb. if you replace it with proper plug, you'll be fine. IDParts has Bosch for $19+ship. other good vendors recommended on this site. personally, I would replace all 4 if they're more than 4 or 5 years old. soak the old ones with penetrant before removing, use a light coating of anti-seize on install

Glow Plug Replacement

Hi
I cheaped out last year and only replaced one plug. If I remember correctly I was given two options for plugs. I went with an aftermarket plug, and my MIL was off for maybe a week, before it threw another P0380 code again. The time before that I replaced a plug I bought from VW dealer, and the difference in resistance was throwing the code. Sometimes cheaping out seems like a good idea, but it usually bites you in the end. So I don't think you necessarly have to replace all 4 plugs at once, but remember what type of plug you bought, and stay with that brand.
