I had a little fun with the FLIR night vision camera in my
535d at TDIfest.
My wife Lisa was talking with Carl in front of the hotel and I had the
535d pointed at them. The night vision pedestrian detection system automatically highlights any part of the image in yellow that it recognizes as a person standing in front of the car. Animals such as deer are highlighted orange.
The image is strictly a thermal image. The FLIR camera does not respond to visible light at all. It sees infra-red energy radiated from (warm) objects, which we feel as heat. The front steps of the building appear to glow because they soaked up heat during the day and are still warmer than the nighttime ambient temp. Objects at ambient temp appear as a middle gray color. Objects warmer than ambient temp appears to glow. Objects cooler than ambient temp appear darker.
The FLIR pic sort of looks like aliens have landed at TDIfest.
