I hit a deer tonight with my 2015 un-fixed Passat TDI 6M. My buyback appt. is scheduled 7/16/2018. Deer tried to stick his head through my passenger-side window that was half-way open. Wife was in passenger's seat and wasn't too happy. No glass broke except the mirror.

Damage is:
Busted Passenger headlight and external mirror.
Dent where front passenger door meets quarter panel.
Front passenger window won't go up the last 1 inch.
Front passenger door will only open 30%

I have full insurance. Car has 58.5k on the clock. I have no intention to try to capture money for the damage from my insurance company. What is impact of this type of damage on my buyback? I am original owner of car, bought new from VW in Apr '15.

My preference is to park the car and turn it in as is without making an insurance claim. But...what is impact on my buyback elegibility? All my paperwork has been accepted and buyback appointment set. Do I need to fix the headlight/mirror and make door/window operational, or can I turn it in with busted parts and not-fully working door/window?

Thanks,
Joe

Our son was t-boned on the passenger side on his way to work in their '13 Jetta TDI. The collision ruined both passenger doors, but the car was completely drivable. All he did was to tape around the doors and windows to keep water out, and drove it until the appointment. I was present at the appointment, which went off without a hitch. The VW rep made some mouth noises about "VW may want to recover repair costs," but they still accepted the car, and the EFT transfer for the full amount happened 3 days later.
You should be good.

Rico, stop posting exact same thing - your buyback was a very long time ago.

As of February 2018, everything has changed. Buyback is done via video chat with a VW rep. They are MUCH stricter now than before.

However, someone I know recently had similar problem. His buyback was denied, but then the dealership employee facilitating it called again and they were able to convince the VW rep that car should be taken back.

WORST thing is your appointment will get cancelled and you will have to come back. I say from what you describing, it will be just fine.

My mk6 golf got hit my 18 wheeler on the rear quarter panel. Part of the quarter panel sheetmetal was torn off. It was never repair. Rear doors and hatch door were operational tho and they brought it back with no issue.

First, if I post the "exact same thing," it's because it's "exactly what happened."

Second, I wasn't aware that a year ago April is "a very long time ago." A very long time ago was 67 million years ago when the asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs.

Third, "everything has changed" since February? Golly, and to think my hamburger the other night tasted just the same.

Fourth, I don't think anyone will take it amiss if you delete your original post, or edit it to remove the egregious nonsense. If you will, I will.

I thought the only thing that tightened up was that the wise guys who were stripping their cars out (seats, doors, electronics, etc) were not getting away with it any more.

Ordinary body damage, so long as the car is driveable under its own power, is still acceptable I believe, correct?

Pretty much. If I was running the program for VW I would also require the original wheels be included (no 4-donuts, or plain steel wheels), but that isn't the case currently.

It actually is. I returned 2 cars in the last few weeks that both had 1 full size spare each. The dealership employee had to take a photo of the original wheel in the trunk. VW rep specifically asked to check if original wheel and tire (even destroyed) was still in the car.

Thanks guys....now...where's that tape? And my deer-brain cleaner?

I drove my OTHER 2015 Passat today on my commute for the first time since I got it in Feb. I am so used to manual transmissions where transitions between coasting in gear, coasting in neutral, coasting on an downshift w/engine braking are so seamless. DSG will take some getting used to, but I think shifting between D (coast in gear), N, and S (engine braking) will pretty much do the same. They should have called "S" mode "B" mode instead...but...I guess Sport-mode is an easier sell than Brake-mode.

Anyway...I feel bad for the deer, and I hate to see the car damage, but on the cusp of buyback and with no financial impact, this is about the least stressful accident I can imagine...

Thanks,
Joe

If the buyback agent gives you any grief for the damage, just tell them you "customized" your car. Don't mention anything about a deer. ;)

And why are you not seeking to double dip with the insurance money too? You feel they aren't on the hook despite all the money you pay them to insure you?

I'd get them to reimburse you what the repair would cost and then sell it back to VW, and not loose sleep over it. This is not insurance fraud.

you might already know this, but from D you can move to the right and manually up/down shift... And engine break that way.

That's great! Better get to the casino quick before your luck changes...
It was not accepted due to luck. It was accepted because the legal settlement specifies that the car* must be bought back if it is drivable. That is the only criterion of the car's condition.

*NB: The judge in the case has clarified the definition of "car" that it may not be stripped, or presumably lacking the original or equivalent parts with which it was equipped.

This is what my son did with a '13 Jetta that had been t-boned. He collected the insurance check and drove it in to Village VW in Chattanooga with both passenger doors taped shut to keep water out. They didn't blink an eye, completely legal.

My two front doors will NOT close. I have to use bungie cords to keep them closed. I refuse to repair them at $600 a whack. I will be bringing the car back just like it is now. Car drives mint. I doubt they will care. This car is definitely going to the crusher. Bald tires, broken doors, suspension clanking and 105K miles. Sad. It drives so nice though. Such a fun car to drive. I'm going to miss it.
