When I bought the car it went into reverse. No forward gears. Messing with it again today when vcds show up, nothing in any gear.

My question is since no codes, can this thing just be low on fluid? I will check it this weekend, but if I were to find the level good, can something else be wrong with the trans that wouldn't set any codes?

The guy I bought it from said it was his daughter's car. She parked it and the next day the trans didn't work, then it sat for 14 months before I bought it. If that story is true, (and I think it is) low fluid seems unlikely. Sounds electrical to me, but seems like that should throw a code.

And before anyone says it, I already know these transmissions suck. A 5 speed swap someday maybe. Would like to see if I can get this thing working for a while.

Thanks for any help!!

Relay 109 has been mentioned many times as a problem.
A bad contact could cause the low voltage problem.
I would have expected codes in the ECU as well.
Try scanning the trans while the car is in drive, then again in reverse.
If you have the Bentley manual you can measure the 12V getting to the trans and a voltage drop for the ground.
Car running, headlights on, AC & fan at high.
Measure from the battery negative post to the Case of the trans, and to the ground wire at the trans harness.
I would not want to see more then a few tenths of a volt.

Just saw these replies. Anyways, the fluid was black, the filter was clogged, and the magnet on the pan had tons of silver slime on it. I changed the filter and new fluid anyways. Reverse is great. Got it to drive around the block slipping badly. I think maybe the old filter was so clogged it couldn't suck any fluid and wouldn't move in any gear? Anyways, this thing is done for. I will start looking into the 109 relay once I figure out what I am going to do for a trans. Thanks for the replies!!

5 speed swap is the only known cure for the "autotragic" curse....

At least the relay is fairly cheap. :)
I've read the trans fluid may have to be changed 2 or 3 times to get most of the old fluid out.
Torque converters hold most of the fluid & no drain plug.
I use to drill the side of GM torque converters and tap the hole while the fluid was draining.
Used a plug that had a allen wrench hole not nut head for clearance & close weight.
Don't know if this is feasible in the VW.

I'm not putting any more time or money in this trans. I did already buy a recently rebuilt FDB trans. Prob throw that in and see what happens. Or happen to find a screaming deal on a complete manual swap.

Changed the engine oil and filter, new pads and rotors, new left rear wheel bearing, abs sensor, new battery, and fixed up the destroyed fuse box over the battery. All that and the trans still slips like crazy! Haha. Gonna see if I can get this other "rebuilt" 01m in this long weekend.

My question now is I did notice that the radio no longer works. VCDS no response from controller. It did work at some point since I have had the car. The only thing I know is different is the driver door panel is removed, so no switches hooked up. No blinking light anywhere on the radio either. Any ideas?

Did you ever replace relay 109?
I would also check the ground wires under the battery tray and possibly where the radio grounds.
Radio ground should be under the dash, possibly left side. (not positive on this)
From your original post, to many different systems involved.
Wouldn't be surprised if the trans problems are part of this.

I did not replace 109 relay. I did pull it out today and it looked fine, as did the relay board. Looks like it may be the original black one. I will order the updated one. I am wondering if all the weird electrical codes were from the bad battery?

Pulled the radio out and the fuse on the back was blown. It was already in bad shape from a previous removal, so I put a cheap pioneer in. Got 2 front door speakers also. The driver side door speaker was destroyed.

I am assuming the no communication to radio controller is because the fuse was blown? The radio IS the controller? Looks like it is going to stay that way. There is nothing connected to the k line.

A bad battery can cause various issues.
The alternator has to work harder to try to keep it up to full charge and can burn out.
I thought the fuse on the back was for power to the antenna.

I put a Kenwood in mine.
Ran new power & ground wires as well as new wires to the 4 speakers.
I'm not overly concerned with radio codes.

I would look into the 9 faults with the low voltage.
Could be a bad ground or power feed.
Some have reported fuses with bad or corroded contacts.
With the car running measure for AC voltage also and how much.

The other trans is far from perfect, but it does drive. 2-3 shift flare and 2-3 second delay from p-d when warm..... Hopefully it works for a while, an auto will not be going back in.

It sat for about a week, and the battery was low. Found a .3 amp draw on fuse 14. The ccm was not going into sleep mode. Took a look and one of the plugs to the ccm was unplugged. Plugged it back in (with multi meter connected) and the horn stayed on. I did blow the 10a fuse in the meter, but I also figured out the problem, and why it was unplugged....

I just pulled both horn 53 relays, and there is no continuity between 87 and 30, so I am assuming the ccm is bad. I see them on ebay for a reasonable price with my part number. What is involved getting it to work with my car with vcds?

Also......in the few miles I have driven this thing with the trans replacement, I noticed the heat is luke warm and it blows mostly out of the vents no matter the dial. So I have the dash torn apart for the foam fix. I have no foam left.

I have it torn apart to where I can seal the 2 doors I see. When put to defrost, another cable moves and I hear another door shut. All the write ups I have seen only mention the 2 doors that I can see. Do I need to tear it apart more to get at the defrost door? Hope not!

Thanks for any help!!!

Pin 87 and 86 should be for the coil in the relay.
I don't think any of the relays have continuity from 30 to 86 or 87.

From what I read the dash has to come out for the defroster repair unless you have a 3 piece housing.
Never had that fun (yet) :)

85 and 86 are for the coil. When energized, 87 connects to 30. I was hoping one of the relays was stuck, but not the case.

Also finally found a pic of a split heater case. The defrost door is solid plastic, so I should be able to seal up the 2 doors and put it back together.

I am going to find a used ccm and hope for the best.

If it were me I'd look to do a couple more fluid changes on the existing transmission rather than tossing in another (01m) one. It's a fair amount of work to do a transmission R&R, a LOT more than a couple of fluid changes. I wouldn't replace an 01m with another one unless I knew for certain that the replacement was in perfect condition (and good luck ascertaining that!).

And, as others have stated, check out your charging/electrical system.

The other trans is already in, and not working 100%........I don't think there was any saving the original. Tons of material in the pan and the filter was full of chunks of who knows what that were probably pretty important.

About the horn stuck on.. It occurred to me that the horn was blaring with the key out of the ignition. That should be related to the alarm then? Also, the driver door handle is pretty jacked up. Related perhaps? I might look at that today after work.

Used convenience module fixed the parasitic draw and horn problem. Also got the 2 doors in the heater box taped up and the dash put back together. Everything is working like it should....except ac.

AC has a leak through the high pressure switch. Not the oring. Through the switch. The connector is wet with refrigerant. Is there an cost friendly replacement?

Looks like this bad pressure switch is aftermarket. Ordered an oem off ebay for 24 shipped. When I first quickly looked for one, I saw 75$.
