2015 Oil Temp

This is my first car with an oil temp indicator. What is the average oil temp you guys are seeing. How high is too high?

With modern oils, and coolant to oil coolers, don't worry, drive more.
Guess if you are towing and you see it spike, then slow down.....
The guages are more about waiting till you see it move a bit on a cold day before you drive it hard.

With the oil-to-coolant heat exchanger, I would expect oil temperature to follow coolant temperature within about 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

Oh I drive more, my 2010 Jetta has 305,000 miles. The brand new Passat is running about 217' oil temp. Just wandering what the norm was.

Ours varies from ~200 to 216F, the highest I've seen so far

I've seen nearly 230F on our 2015 SEL driving rapidly mid-regen.

Run the right oil (5W30 507.00 spec), keep your coolant properly maintained, and never worry about oil temp.

200's is nothing, seen my air cooled bikes reach 400F in full throttle slow trails on hot days- amsoil never sludged up- ever! The bikes wont idle as I lost valve clearance but run perfect again as soon as I shoot down a long stretch and get some air across the fins :)

223 is pretty common on the Alltrack and '15 Passat.

BTW I think the oil cooler is also there to get the oil up to temp a lot quicker.

Yep! It works both ways.

I've been paying somewhat closer attention to the oil temp on the 15 EA288 and am very surprised on much and rapidly it changes temp by a few degrees.

Remember, the ea-288 has what is effectively a multi-stage cooling system to help it warm up faster, them limit heatloss to improve efficiency...even had grill shutters on the Jetta.
Then you add the transmission (DSG) and oil coolers that are looped into to coolant loop, and the fluids all warm up to their optimal temps very fast.
Really an engineering marvel. Much more like the type of engineering I see on planes (((just look at all the extra tubing, etc, reminds me of many turbo-prop and jet engine in both complexity and density) than on cars in many ways.

Drive a gen3 1.8T TSI and compare the warm up time of the TDI and you'd hardly say it warms up "fast". In about 2 min and 1/2 mile the TSI has coolant at 200F. Screaming hot air out of the vents in 1 mile.

The 288 are faster at heating up than previous CR diesels, yeah, but I wouldn't say its fast.

A gas engine is a gas engine ..those have been like that for decades...glad you have discovered it.
Talking about diesel here...hence the TDIclub...
