So I blew a fuse, I guess. Was replacing a tail light, then the car wouldn't start the next morning. I charged the battery, but that didn't fix it. The IP comes up, the headlights come on, but nothing from the engine bay.

I imagine this is an easy fix, just not sure which fuse to check/replace.

Ok, this might seem crazy, but I don't even have a fuse in position 10 (ECM). I looked at my wife's beetle, and it doesn't look like she does either.

I checked the other engine fuses, and they all seem good.

When I turn the key, the lights go out and no noise. Nothing happens. No clicking, etc. Anyone have an idea?

Thanks for your help.

Could be as simple as a bad connection on your battery terminals. If lights such as interior go off when turning key to crank, then voltage in system is dropping to near zero. Typical of a dirty battery terminal.

Turn on interior lights and try cranking. If they go out your voltage is dropping out.

Ok, update here. I just realized this morning that nothing electrical works in the car. Interior lights, power windows, etc. Nothing. The only thing electrical that comes on is the instrument cluster, and actually, the headlights work too.

I tried to start it while checking the battery voltage, and the voltage does not drop. It stays 12.7 or so no matter what. So, I think the circuit isn't even getting to the battery.

Another development: There is a clicking under the hood when we turn the key, maybe 3 or 4 clicks then it stops. It seems to be coming from the general area of the starter...any ideas? I'm guessing the problem is probably where that clicking is coming from.

How can I test the circuit all the way to the battery to figure out where the break is? I have a meter, just not real smart with electrical stuff.

I would suggest that you clean your battery terminals and grounds, as a first step.

To get to the main ground and starter connection you need to pull your battery and battery tray out. It is then pretty obvious.

I like to use a brass brush to clean the connectors, then put electrical contact grease (or vaseline, or silicone grease) on them to slow corrosion.

If you still have trouble after this, then it sounds as if your starter solenoid may be the issue.

Since your wife has a beetle why don't you try jump start. At least you will know if your battery is good.
And as DanG suggested check your starter solenoid. you may try to tap your starter with hammer (off course you don't have to use to much force). This will bring you fork back into to normal position.

Jump starting won't do any good, sounds like the ground to the starter is bad or the starter itself needs rebuld or replace, that clicking sound you hear is the solenoid engaging.

Just wanted to let everyone know what happened with this problem. There were two fuses burned out in my fuse box. I replaced them, everything works. The weird thing was they didn't even seem like "important" fuses. One was the cigarette lighter in the trunk. Maybe that affects the start circuit somehow, I don't know. Anyhow, all good. Thanks for everyone's suggestions.

One was the cigarette lighter fuse, but what was the other one? Fuse 6 for the Comfort Control Module?
