I have a 1Z from a '97 Passat
going into my '92 eurovan

I'm thinking about doing a few upgrades
while the motor is out.

Tune
Injectors
Turbo
Clutch
EGR Delete

Any recommendations on which parts to use?
Or am I forgetting something I should do at the same time.

I think the big challenge of a TDI in a Vanagon is proper intercooling so EGTs don't get too high. I'd work on that first.

what kind of things like what size nozzles and what turbo will define what all the other parts you need to make it work.
set yourself at a reasonable HP and build it for that (mainly turbo and nozzles) the rest will follow.
200 HP is not that difficult to get to
Nozzles 764
Turbo (there are a few, pick one) 30 lbs of boost
ARP head studs and never let it overheat or your screwed.
endurance stage 2 clutch
LSD and bolts vs rivets
EGR and lower vent delete
PD150 intake
colt cam
larger FMIC
big free flowing 2.5 or 2.75 downpipe and a custom header or a very good flowing header manifold.
you can get to 200HP with the stock IP but a 11mm upgrade will go a long way.

you should check out my build. 230hp revs to 6K

the 3 big things on these builds is EGT's
head lift (just not enough clamping pressure on these engines)
anything past 230 to 250 is going to take major internal work, girdle plate and rods at the very least.

the #1 thing you have to ask is how many miles you want it to last for and #2 how much money and i willing to spend.
let this be your guides on the build

I wasn't thinking of going that high...
I'm hoping to get ~150hp.

I was thinking of spending about $3000 or less.

The engine needs a turbo, so I might as well upgrade it.
injectors are old, lots of km, so they should be rebuilt/upgraded

same with the clutch.

You can switch the actuator operation from pressure to vacuum and put on a VNT-17, or keep it as is and use a 20/52. I'd go with 502 nozzles and a stage 3 or 4 tune (18-22 PSI). Leave internals alone. That will get you close to 150, perhaps a bit shy of it. But it will run clean, be responsive, and still get as reasonable FE as you can pushing a box down the road.
