wiper problems

I've just replaced my wiper linkage and obviously botched the reassembly because the wipers want to move down from the parked position. Does anybody know how to figure out the proper positions of the motor and linkage when it all goes back together?

Take the arms off, cycle the wipers, shut off & put the arms on?

You can do that with Beetles, but not Golfs or Jettas

Correct.

I like to set my wipers too high in the winter so that they are in the section of windshield that gets hit with the heat of the defrost. I readjust them once the snow is past.
