Default Window Regulator Clips

2002 Golf Tdi.
Failed regulator clips and cables in the front drivers side window. We bought a 3rd party repair kit so we also changed the cog that the motor turns to move the cables to lift the clips that hold the window as it moves up and down. It's quite the contraption.

We can't seem to twist the clips to bring the cables to the correct tension. It honestly seems impossible that there could ever be enough slack to turn the clips the way they're supposed to sit in the rails, like the fella in this video does.
Has anyone reading this made this repair work? Any tips? I'm worried the rubber covering for the cable that came with the 3rd party kit is too long, and by trimming it, I could free up more cable, but I don't want to mess it up. It does seem longer than the original tubing.
Thanks for thinking about my window!
