I have a couple of Liters Elf DID 5W40 left (505.01) they are no longer stock, they been replaced by Total Quartz INEO MC3 5W30 (505.01).
The question is:
Can I mix both oils for my next oil change? Say 2 Liters of Elf + 2.5 Liters of Total?
Thx

That mix is what is in my crankcase right now and is about to be changed this weekend with 10,000 miles on it. According to Indigo Blue Wagon these can be mixed as needed for 505.01 appllications. There should be a couple of threads on that buried somewhere. From what I understand this is basically the same stuff. Enjoy!

If both are 505.1 complient it should be ok to mix.

Thanks in advance.
None of them are 505.1 compliant however they are both 505.01 compliant.

Total formerly was Elf. Probably the exact same stuff right down to the oil basestocks.

Even if it wasn't the exact same stuff, under what circumstances would it not be OK to mix oils that meet the same VW spec?

There are many people who would complain about conflicting additive packages when mixing oils from different brands, but if you are staying with the same company, using the older oil and the one that replaced it, I wouldn't worry at all. Go for it.
