Hey all, I work in a shop with a small car section and we sell car oil by year.

Before 2000 is semi synth
After 2000 is fully synth
There is another one for fully mineral but I cant remember it off the top of my head.

Since I got my TDI I have been wary of the oil we sell to VAG cars so I want to make sure I have things right.

VE TDI: VW 505.00
OR
VW 500.00 WITH 505.00

PD TDI: VW 505.01,
OR 506.01 or 507.00 WITH 505.01

CR TDI: VW 507.00

Are these the basic oil ratings I need? The way it stands we have been selling top ups of VW505 and 502 oil to PD's and commonrails.

Sorry for going off topic slightly but I dont think this deserves its own thread. All this talk of why different ratings are different to eachother got me thinking.

Thanks
bbk

Are there any US PD 1.9 BRM's still in warranty?

The BRM can and does eat it's camshaft and lifters even when using Castrol 5w40 spec'd oil at every change, done on time every time, by dealers or not.

I own 2 that are just such examples.

There are many like mine.

So why is this 505.01 -vs- 507.00 an issue again, since an ever expanding history is already becoming well established that the 505.01 5w40 wasn't able to save the planet??

Because some people here can't stand the thought that their VW engineered marvel has a deficiency

The exhaust valves run much hotter; some of this heat is transferred to the tappets, hence reducing the oil film thickness on these parts that come in contact with the camshaft.

It makes perfect sense that you'd see more wear on the cam lobes that actuate the exhaust valves....
Not the case at all. The exhaust valves have the the compression pushing against them when closing. Puts a strain on everything.
Years ago I rebuilt an Olds 5.7 Diesel. The exhaust valves were receeded from all the compression helping push them closed.

My 2006 Jetta TDI 1.9l BRM is still under warranty till September 2010 or 50k and my PT warranty is till Sep 2011 or 60k. I have only 37k on it and it was purchased in September of 2006 (06/06 Build)

Just answering your question :)

I have 182k miles on my 06, as far as I know its on the original cam. Just went to the dealer today to get oil they punched in my vin and told my 06 is actually an 07? They sold me the SLX Professional LL03 $8

Hope for the best!

I like to think of it as VW engineering deficiency made a marvel.

They sold me the SLX Professional LL03 $8
5w30... return it.. and your dealer should know the difference between 2006 and 2007 TDI's... namely that there weren't any 2007's

If your PD engine isn't under warranty, the best oil analysis results (by far), with respect to valve train wear have been with the 5w-40, API CJ-4/SM spec, commercial engine oils. Even in engines where the wear rates have started to ramp over time, the switch to the CJ-4/SM synthetics has been able to reverse this trend.

The response in post #1 is in error IMHO. The injector lobes are fine since they use a roller. Their very presence robs the valve lobes of surface area, which increases the psi on the valve lobes and followers...that is the problem here, and a bad design which leads to premature wear and failure.
VW selling 5w-30 505.01 did not help either, but since the cams last longer than 60k miles, vw doesn't really care.
Shame on VW for 2 failures here.

I've used the VW 502.00/505.01 oils in gas engines and they work extremely well for a 10k service interval. In fact, if you have a HiPo gas engine and need a thicker oil, these are an excellent choice.

As ABC points out, this is primarily a design issue with the PD engine. The metallurgy (surface hardening, specifically) of some batches of camshsfts is also suspect. But the very high contact pressures in the presence of abrasive soot particles is the main culprit.

Based in the above linked PDF and postings here and on BITOG over the years, I have decided to try Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5w30 again. Purchased 5 liters today.

Read it a bit closer... :) *Which* PD engines?
Different stipulations here. Explains the fixed interval usage of it.
Datasheet said:
MOTUL Specific 504 00 507 00 5W-30 is fully backward compatible over previous VW oil standards such as 501 01, 502 00, 503 00 and 503 01 for Gasoline engines, and 505 00, 505 01, 506 00 and 506 01 for Diesel engines.

VOLKSWAGEN Touareg R5 and V10 TDI from MY2003 to MY2007 must only use an approved VW 506 01 lubricant such as MOTUL Specific 506 01 506 00 503 00 0W-30.

Drain intervals remain fixed at 15 000 km in Europe for any car calling for VW 501 01, 502 00, 505 00 or 505 01 oils even if the vehicle is using MOTUL Specific 504 00 507 00 5W-30.

Does anyone know if PD engines in Europe had some kind of change from 1999-2003 to 2004? Different head, cam, flat tappet to roller setup? There's got to be a reason why it's such a specific recommendation.

I think oil change intervals differ too. The first PDs (since 1998?) called for 5k miles. I think 2003 and up calls for 10k miles.

Visually you can't see any changes. The setup looks pretty much the same.

The Motul data sheet seems to address intervals for different older TDIs [no extended intervals]. I meant the blanket statement by Mobil saying not to use it at all in certain PDs.

I wonder if there's some translation problem, as the Motul data sheet is very clear about which TDIs can use it for what interval.

Let Reading VW do a 40,000 mile DSG oil change and a 10,000 mile engine oil change. Asked them to put an extra quart in the car. When I read the bottle I realized it was the Castrol LLO3 type. Inquired of the dealer what oil was in the crank case. Confirmed they mistakenly used LL03 and they want the car back to perform a flush and refill. Apparently they are still convinced that 505.01 is the necessary flavor. Also spoke to Castrol on this and they are still saying that 504/507 is not a suitable replacement nor are they to be mixed. The DSG is @ 80,000 miles and the son now drives the 5 speed with 84,000 miles. So far so good.
