Can anyone post a link or info about the history of the TDI 2.0L engine that is now standard in the USA? Also, is this the exact same motor that is in the diesel version of the Audi A3? Thanks

The US version 2.0L CR diesel is almost identical, no matter what car it is installed in. From what I've been told (and I could be wrong) the only significant difference between the Audi A3 engine and the VW Golf/Jetta engine is that the Audi version has an oil level sensor in the oil pan. The VW and Audi engines are all CBEA (for 2009) and CJAA (2010+) engine codes. If you do a search you will find a nice "self-study guide" on these engines that goes into great detail on how they are made and how they work.

It is part of an engine family that traces its origins back to the first in-line liquid-cooled engines that VW began building in the early 1970's, although there have been so many evolutionary and revolutionary changes since then that there are no parts in common. There are some telling dimensions that have always stayed the same ... notably, the 88mm spacing between cylinder center-lines and the locations of the fasteners that bolt the head to the block.
