I'd be somewhat happy paying that price for diesel, here in rural N. Cal.
we have been and still are paying 3.66 for the last 3 months.
The station closest to me is run by Feather Falls casino, but is about the same as most of the Oroville diesel prices. The exception is the Chevron chain where the price is its normal 50 - 60 cents higher than any other station; I NEVER patronize Chevron stations due to their extortionate pricing.

Looks like you are stuck with only 2 stations in Dunsmuir, but it looks like Manfredi's is your best choice at $3.55.

I only filled up 86 times this past year. It would have been more, but I was getting really excellent fuel economy.
T-red, I bet you are happy you are no longer paying California prices.

A quick look at the beginning of this thread and now, it seems that prices haven't changed much then vs. now. Of course if I looked at prices year by year it would show quite a change through the past 11+ years. But, it's tough to follow unless you see the same people - living in the same area - posting prices.

Stuff like this kinda fascinates me re: the pricing structures of some of these chains and how they vary from location to location.

Case in point, I've heard several people say Chevron is sky high in California, but here on the Alabama gulf coast our local Chevrons, few that they are, are highly competitive and occasionally offer dirt-cheap diesel. It wasn't but maybe six months the one on the main highway here was selling diesel for 30 cents a gallon less than the usual discounters. I ran it, and it was fine.

On the other hand, Shell is one of the more outrageously priced brands around here (with a few exceptions), but their diesel is totally acceptable, whereas up in Birmingham my experience with Shell stations was they were competitively priced but the diesel was total crapola.

Tom,

It could be that Chevron doesn't OWN the stations/fuel back there, but may have leased the brand name to another company. For example, when BP sold their ARCO brand holdings to Tesoro, they leased the ARCO name for Northern California, Oregon, & Washington.

Iirc, the Shell stations around here are all snickered with the notice that the diesel is not a Shell branded fuel. Could be why you see a difference in performance.

Yes, demand is up. The economy is bubbling.

But I'm going out on a limb and predicting the spread between ULSD and RUG -- currently about 40 cents/gallon in Minnesota and 42 cents nationwide -- is about as wide as it is going to get for this cycle. I think over the next few months that gasoline will rise more than diesel.

Diesel is currently about 30 cents a gallon more expensive than regular unleaded down here on the Alabama gulf coast. Tonight at the Circle K Exxon, the spread was:

RUG: $2.329
MID: $2.609
PRE: $2.909
Diesel: $2.629

Those prices are more or less the same as all the other stations; unleaded has spiked over the last few days. A week ago it was about 10¢ cheaper.

$2.99 this morning NW Indiana at a station that does not play the exempt tax pricing game. It's $3.15 posted at my Exempt Diesel stations so add $0.29 tax for true price of $3.44 out of pocket cost. Quite a difference in cost!

*IF* diesel continues to go up ~ and stays up

*IF* diesel continues to go up ~ and stays up. (long term)

It will support higher NADA-KBB retail values in the future.

Seems to me the reverse would be more likely. If diesel is more expensive, diesel cars will command a smaller premium over gasoline. Sad thing is most buyers will say "but the fuel is more expensive" and not calculate that, despite the higher fuel cost, the cost per mile for a diesel is lower.

It is from $2.88 to $3.08 here in Sheboygan as of Jan 13. I usually buy from the stations I trust and of course their price is a closer to the higher figure.

Indigo:)

You are 110 % correct

... Because I did not complete my post

... there is a (close) price relationship on petroleum products.

... Crude, N. Y. Harbor, and Gasoline move in the (general) same direction.

... several months ago when prices were 'bout double, TDi cars were "KING."

... 'cause along with the better diesel MPG (in general) there was the help of dieselgate:p

... IMO the VW TDi cars still available, will do well on retail values, compared with gassers with the same condition and mileage

... again you are correct ~~ cost per mile is "KING."
