Hello,

The other day I took my boat out for an overnight trip. Backed the Passat with the boat trailer into the water and maybe got the rear end of the car a bit wet. This is my W8 Passat wagon => TDI swap.

When I got back several electrical issues immediately showed up:

1. Car doors will not unlock. Nothing happens at all with the hey fob buttons being pressed. For a while the trunk would unlock but no longer.

2. From the inside of the car, still nothing will lock or unlock using the door buttons. No door unlock when removing the key from the ingnition. The passenger side door will unlock and lock using the door button. The driver's door will unlock using the key in the door lock. If you lock it though, it automatically unlocks. The little red light indicating the alarm is on and it is locked is flashing at all times (locked or unlocked).

4. The windows will not roll down using the door buttons.

5. The sunroof opened once, now it will not function (I closed it manually).

6. None of the lights come on in the car when the doors open. The door lights at the bottom of the doors do still function. The lights inside do work using the switches.

7. The stereo will not come on (aftermarket stereo). The lights on the climatronic do not come on and it shows "--" and no temperature.

Everything else still works and the car drives fine. I have checked the fuses in the box next to the steering wheel - none are burnt out.

Any suggestions what else to try? Is there some central electronic system that runs all of the above problem areas?

Thanks!

There are just too many to list....
It is because the water in the floorboard from your leaking clogged sunroof drains and/or clogged shut cowl drains caused your CCM to take a swim.

Take the driver's seat out, take the sill plate trim loose (this goes all the way back under the rear seat... all one piece), and pull the carpet up and have a look. Usually they'll smell awful long before there is a problem, but I am in and out of enough neglected cars to know that people's noses must not all work as well as mine does. ;)

The CCM itself sits in a plastic holder, take the whole holder out and open it up.

The TCM (if you are not shifting it yourself) is in the same location under the passenger seat.

Thanks oilhammer. You are probably right. I fixed one of the sunroof drains. When I tried to fix the other the tube detached and I never had the drive to fix it yet.... No TCM, my car is now manual!

Too many.
CCM is W8 specific. I might have a good spare I'd part with if needed. I'll have to get it from the farm and test it in my car.

Thanks Uberhare. I ordered a non W8 version for cheap ($20). I realize I may lose some functionality but hope it will work. I should get it tomorrow. I will let you know how it works and the part # of my CCM and maybe I will want yours.

I got the CCM today. Took a little "Customizing" of plugs to make it fit but after that, there was still no noticeable difference in function. I am wondering if if my issues truly are due to a non- functioning CCM. Any way to tell for sure?
Uberhare, my W8 CCM part # is 1C0 959 759 C. It was dry and no sign I can see it has been water logged. If it still could be the CCM and you have the same one PM me a price.
Thanks!

Uberhare, I haven't heard from you so I have ordered a W8 CCM for $30. Hope you didn't start pulling yours but I couldn't wait.

Hey you didn't get my message through google chat?

I wasn't able to get it out for a week or so anyways. It's up at the farm. There is a 3 digit code after the part number not shown on the CCM that will indicate the version. You need the correct W8 wagon version for everything to work (i.e. power folding mirrors). They are hard coded. How's the wiring look further up from the module?

Hey, sorry for my impatience... the wiring and everything looks good up to the dash. That is why I wonder if it is even the issue. I have had mouse issues and found a dead one up by the dash. Could be the problem but will be hard to figure out I imagine...

How do I find the code after the part #?

1C0 959 799C 081 is what you are after. Not sure if the version code is printed anywhere on them.

Reading all your faults, I bet you have some broken wires somewhere.

Yes, that is my fear given that the other CCM did not help at all... we shall see!

I Got the correct CCM (part numbers and almost all other numbers match the old one and it looks just as clean inside). No difference. I am guessing the wiring has gone haywire somewhere. I have checked all I could see under the dash and no obvious problems. There are a lot of spliced and cut wires due to the swap so it is really hard to figure out...

I am guessing I will have to get used to having no windows etc...

Does anyone have any other ideas of what may have gone wrong? Blown fuses somewhere or something? I can't see how so many problems could arise so suddenly with no obviously chewed up wires or blown fuses or something...

Had the original ccm been wet ? I had brought mine back to life after my car had been submerged up to mid ins cluster by doing this: With cover off, ran full cycle in dishwasher after which brushed carefully pcb removing any scuzz from ic's. worked fine ever since. Water from flooding softens varnish coating that factory coats the pcb to encapsulate flux. When it gets wet, the whole thing looks like green cheeze from the flux acting on copper, bridging circuits. I've successfully fixed many ecu's using this technique. Just carefully remove any residue of varnish and soap.

I may try that. There was no sign the CCM had every been wet. And the replacement as well (see photo above). I suspect it is something else but I may try that.

Thanks!

Grounds, Brown wires, may be part of problem. The ground studs are steel, the lugs are brass, and acorn nuts are aluminum. Really clean every one you can find and apply no-alox compound.

Thanks for the input. I will slowly get to doing all of the above.

It was an Ontario car before it moved out to BC with me about 7 years ago.

Battery condition/age/voltage is just basic starting point. If system is not getting full voltage, all sorts of problems occur.

Check your fuses at all?

Look for 14 and 38 on the side of the dash and there will also be 2 15 A fuses on the top of the relay panel under the dash to check.

How deep did the rear of the car go?

Thanks for the idea. I have checked some relevant fuses but not all of them I will look again. The rear of the car may have gone deep enough to get the wiring panel in W8s that is under the spare tire wet. I run a wire out the removeable plug hole there for the trailer signals. I will check all of this soon. Super busy with other things at the moment and it DOES drive ;)

Update: I checked fuses 14 and 38. They appear fine. I did previously check the 5-6 15Amp fuses under the dash and they were fine. I will check that fuse? Or wiring board under the spare tire soon. I also appear not to have access to the extra 20l tank the W8 has... a bit tough to get to that area now that the trunk won't open....

How do I open it? This is a wagon and the switch in the door does not work or the remote.

Thanks!

Fold rear seat down. go in and near the trunk lock there should be a yellow or green handle that will trip the latch

Sorry, thinking of a sedan not wagon..

Yes it is. I am slowly trying to lube it up and hope it will work. Does it work without the electronics of the lock functioning?
