How much coolant is actually needed??

Fill the bottle using distilled water to the lower line on the bottle now (measure how much you put in) then add that same amount of straight G12 when you can get your hands on some. The very slight temporary dilution won't be an issue.

ok. After more research G12 is the only way to go if I dont want to incurr a huge disaster. So I guess im adding distilled water and hoping the weather stays not that cold.

Valvoline/Zerex is licensed to use the BASF formulation for Glysantin G-05. Glysantin G-05 is a HOAT coolant with no 2-EHA (2-ethylhexanoic acid). 2-EHA is the additive in Dex-Cool and caused the Dex-Cool sludge problem.

Glysantin G-30 is the green/blue coolant to mix with the older generation coolants.

Here's a great article with a color table.

no. Was just done by previous owner 40 000 kms ago. have paper work to prove it.
Long story short, I had a training school working on my car, they left a clamp off a coolant hose. While doing an Italian tune up, hose blew off. Did not notice all the smoke behind me till doing the second wot run. I have to assume running the pump without coolant smoked it.

You're already gonna be there. I know only 40K but i'd do the belt again anyway. You'll have to take belt off to get pump off anyway.

EDIT: VW sells G12 by the gallon and is less than anywhere else I can find. Think I pd $21/gal
