I have a 2005 Passat that was meticulously maintained. 2 weeks back the trans went and I do not want to put any more money into the car. It has 180,000 miles and the engine is good. It was meticulously maintained using only Pentosin II oil. I also added Opti-Lube XPD on EVERY fill up. The balance shaft upgrade was done at 50,000 miles and is still going strong. RAXLE axles were installed as well around 50,000 miles. A remanufactured torque converter was installed at 150,000 miles.

Not sure about in the States, but up here you're lucky to get $1000 with a dead transmission. I've seen them go as low as $500.

I picked up a wagon last Friday with 182,000 on it, good engine and transmission, though the rest of it was a bit rough. Perfect swap car though.
He did a full cam and TB change with my parts and a balance shaft delete kit all in the last 10,000 miles. Mostly new alternator and starter.

...and I paid $300 for the entire car.

YMMV

Unfortunately unless you part it out, it's worth the same as what a junkyard would give to a non runner. Up here that's around $300.

I have a cheap trans in connecticut if you wanna get it running for a better sale. Could probably still get 2-3k if its running imo.

Sedans only make good parts cars IMO :)
The trunk has more room that it looks. :) Carried all the necessary go karting equipment for 2 years for my son and this also included a set of rain tires too and everything one needs to race a kart for a season. Yes a wagon would have been better but this sedan sort of fell in my lap a few years ago with a bad transmission.
