98 Jetta TDI AHU 1.9L (944 TDI swap in progress) I moved so now i got nothing but an AHU in a garage on a pallet.
ive ran many types of DIY and kit catch cans on my TDI and i always end up going back to the turbo scavenge strait from the valve cover. there are only a few options that dont totally suck and its fairly pointless.
the only thing it really does is look fancy. even for my high 6500RPM reving AHU it was pointless.
spend your money in better places.

Going against the grain, I have a pro-vent 200 with the drain back to the oil pan. Simple closed system set up. No problems with over 65k miles, just clean/change the filter.

My understanding is they help keep oil from the EGR out of the intercooler or are you discussing a different catch can.

Mark, can you provide a diagram of how you use the Pro-Vent 200?

I can take pictures from the top & post here.

But recently I had foot surgery so it may be a little while.

I did the "agricultural strainer" using a strainer from Tractor Supply and some 3/4" hose from the breather and air inlet to the intake. A few stainless steel wool pads stuffed in the strainer give it somewhere for the oil to coalesce.
I do see some oil condensing in the breather-strainer tube, and no more than one little spot made it out, but it doesn't see much coming from the engine in the first place.

PVC is likely a cheaper alternative to the metal catch cans. It's mostly for people wanting to keep that oil residue out of their intakes.

How often do you drain it? Is there a filter inside for the oil to condense on?

Romad,

After mebbe 5-6k, I emptied it for the first time yesterday. A couple of ounces of oil went back into the crankcase. Car is definitely running cleaner.
And yes, there is a bit of filter material in the can.

I must confess to being, like many, a bit sceptical of it's efficacy. But with
my mods, the car smokes less at WOT and is more responsive. Jeff of RC
claims it helps to keep the turbo blades a LOT cleaner, I'm now a believer.

Your Mileage WILL Vary

Sounds like you can wait and just empty it at the 10K oil change interval.
