Will these rims fit on my 2004 Mk4? What sort of suspension altering will be required, if they will work?

Thanks!

225-40 18 tires are less than 1% larger (0.4%) than the ubiquitous 195-65 15 tires that my Golf came with.

Assuming you have wheels with 35-40 et numbers and a 5x100 bolt circle, you should be good to go.

Now you will only have to contend with the appearance of tiny brakes, depending on how busy the wheels are.

GL! :D

From what I've been able to ascertain, mine are 5x100, and the ones I''ve specced are 5x112, so I don't think they'll fit. Boo.

You can always run a set of 5x100-to-5x112 adapters. It's fairly common for VW owners to use such adapters to run Audi wheels on their VW!

Why would you want to do this to yourself or your ride?
Why not? It's his/her car and he/she should be able to equip their car however they see fit. The OP wasn't asking for opinions on whether or not they should upgrade their wheels, but simply if it was possible. Don't judge other peoples' choices just because they may be different from yours. Oh and btw, I've been running 18" wheels with 235/40/18 tires for over 6 years now with no ill effects on my car or myself, thanks.
