I am trying to improve the economy of my '01 PD 130hp Passat. I was getting mid 40's (imp.) which I don't consider adequate (I am used to mid 50's from non-PD 110hp). So far I have done the following:
New air filter
Pumped up the tyres (42F 36R)
Cleaned the intake
Blanked the EGR pipe
Blanked the vacuum line to the anti-shudder valve
Re-seated the MAF connector with electrical grease
I have noticed an improvement of about 5% from that lot. I am going to change the fuel filter (I don't know if that would help economy?) and do an oil service. I would really appreciate any advice on what else I could do to increase economy on my PD. I am considering a re-map and a cat removal. I have always found cats hit fuel economy in the past but I don't know about this engine.
I was just going to put in a good quality 10/40 but I am interested in what sort of gains you might get from thinner oil (110000 on the engine). I am not interested in changing driving style - just making the engine more efficient.
I was thinking about MAF or Temp. sender problems but the car drives very well and doesn't show any warning lights.
Many thanks for your help.
