Study finds modern diesel cars emit fewer carbonaceous particulates than gasoline cars

A new study by an international team led by researchers from the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland has found that modern diesel passenger cars equipped with diesel particulate filters (DPFs) emit fewer carbonaceous particulates than gasoline-powered vehicles. The open-access study is published in the journal Scientific Reports.

They found that emissions from new gasoline cars (both EU and US) produce up to 6.5 times more SOA than POA after 5–10 hours of atmospheric aging. New diesel cars produced no detectable SOA, contrasting with old diesels, for which SOA production is about equal to emitted POA.

This is another in a series of studies which support the premise that gasoline engine exhaust is largely responsible for SOA production in urban locations, and that exhaust from newer diesel vehicles is largely passive with respect to SOA precursors. Regulators really need to start focusing more on NMOG/VOC emissions than NOx.

I'm very much in favour of forcing particulate filters in any kind of combustion engine, Diesel or otherwise.

The only problem with a study such as mentioned above is that the regulators refuse to let facts get in the way of their own prejudices. They prefer to generate facts and only regard that such as demonize their enemies and support their friends.

This is just a verbose way of saying EPA, CARB, and such are not interested in the integrity their jobs should require.

And I'm very much in favor of throwing over zealous regulators into volcanoes . . . Some regulation is good, too much is rarely better . . . :) :)

Agree 100%. Well said. :cool:

I will GLADLY take high NOx levels from an emissions cheating CR TDI while having significantly LOWER emissions in all other regulated emissions categories compared to any gasser.

:)
