I'm getting a shudder/smoke with acceleration issue on a 2005 Jetta PD 140K+ miles, new fuel and air filter

VCDS fault
18628 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor B1 S1: Signal too High (Rich)
P2196 - 000 - - - Intermittent

Did a search and found possible stuck open EGR, also found a link to post to do a voltage test per http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=150556&highlight=P2196

Anyone have a story on their own solution for P2196?
Did cleaning the connector with O2 safe electrical contact cleaner work for you?

Troubleshooting PD O2 sensor harness connector

How do I use a multimeter to test the O2 sensor harness connector?

I see 6 gold flat pins. Which pins do you touch? There's the male end and a female end.
From Bentley (Thanks to PDJetta)
  • Checking primary voltage
  • Disconnect 6-pin harness connector to Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) -G39-. Harness connector of oxygen sensor is located at vehicle floor under a synthetic cover.
  • Connect multimeter to terminals 2 + 6 of connector to control module for Diesel-Direct fuel injection system for voltage measurement.
  • Switch on ignition and measure primary voltage.
  • Specified value: 0.400 to 0.500 Volts
  • Switch ignition off.
  • If specified value is obtained:
  • Replace Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) -G39- => page VW-A4-FU14-26-001-0426-4, item VW-A4-FU14-26-001-048.
  • Erase DTC memory of control module for Diesel-Direct fuel injection system => page VW-A4-FU14-ST-002-06ST-26, Diagnostic mode 4: Reset/erase diagnostic data.
  • Generate readiness code => page VW-A4-FU14-ST-003-03ST-50.
  • If specified value is not obtained:
  • Test oxygen sensor wires => page VW-A4-FU14-23-003-0123-125.

This may not be an O2 sensor problem. With the code "Signal too high (rich)", that may be true and the O2 sensor is just reporting it. You are seeing black smoke that indicates this, as well. You may have a bad injector that is flodding a cylinder with too much fuel. Do check the O2 sensor circuit first, though.

PD,
How do I use my multimeter red and black leads to test terminals 2 +6?
I suspect the 6 flat spade terminals inside the connector are numbered
-I need my super magnifier reading glasses to see if they're stamped next to each pin.

Connect multimeter to terminals 2 + 6 of connector to control module for Diesel-Direct fuel injection system for voltage measurement

The shudder with acceleration feels like it's running on 3 cylinders.
VCDS Measuring Blocks Group 13 shows this data on injector balance:

IQ IQ IQ IQ
-0.35 0.61 0.19 -0.33

http://www.volksparts.com/o2sensors.htm
Under Sensor Failures
"A dead sensor will prevent the onboard computer from making the necessary air/fuel corrections, causing the air/fuel mixture to run rich in the "open loop" mode f operation, resulting in much higher fuel consumption and emissions."

The car idles smooth and exhaust smell in the garage at idle is not strong at all.

I have this same issue after replacing the infamous cracked egr cooler pipes. Any solutions?
