Temperature gauge on 2004 Passat TDI finally pegged at 0. Started working erratically; now no reading. Any ideas on how to fix would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

I would start by checking the connections at the sensor and the gauge. Remember to check the grounds.

Thanks Joe. The gauge is erratic as it'll work when engine is "cold" get up to temp. (190) then fall back to 90 (zero) and stay there. Will check connections.

Most likely the sensor has gone bad. This is typical symptoms of it.
It is not an easy sensor to get to on the Passats.

Thanks MOGolf. All indications are that it is, indeed, the sensor. Since this might be a bit more for me to tackle, I'm considering taking it to a repair facility where "hopefully" it won't be too costly.

It turned out to be the temperature gauge sensor. It took a couple of hours labor at the shop to replace.

Thanks to all for their helpful comments.
