The answer is: it depends.

If it is hot, the tank will hold more.

In my own experience, it will hold about 17 gallons, maybe as much as 17.5. I typically fill after the warning goes off, and it will take better than 15 gallons when I do so.

I also ran the tank dry to see what my reservoir really was. It went 124.1 miles after the alarm. That works out to about 2.4-2.5 gallons.

So I'd figure about 17 gallons.

Your results may vary due to manufacturing tolerances, temperature when you fill, angle of car, yada, yada, yada...

Powderhound,
How fast were you driving when you drove 125 miles from buzzer to dry!!!
That is an interesting note and good to keep in mind if one is far from a station when buzzer goes off!!
Thanks,

My car manual says that my Jetta can take 55 liter with a 7 liter reserve when the warning light comes on. I don't know how much that makes in US Gallons...

Could somebody remind me what the maximum fuel capacity, with venting, that an A4 Jetta can hold?

I thought it was 16.5 gallons.

But over the weekend, I put 15 gallons into the car, when the low fuel light was not lit (after driving on Flying J for 725 miles), though it probably would have come on in about 10-20 miles).

Thanks & sorry if this has been answered before.

Tango: What I drove was more like 9 liters.

1st 77 miles: I was going 70 mph, freeway driving for 80% and a/c on for 1/2. The rest (50 mi.) was a/c on, 75% freeway, but only 62 mph.

Man, that 70 mph during city driving is a bear!

The 9 liter venting would refer to how much more fuel you can add to the tank after it is full the first time. The vent trick adds fuel to the expansion space at the top of the tank that is normally unfillable unless you know the vent trick.

Craig: The 9 liters to which I referred is the amount left in the tank after the low fuel alarm goes off, not the vent. While my manual states that there is about 1.9 gallons in the reserve, I drove it dry to see what was really available to the engine.

If I remember correctly, my manual says 7 L left when the light comes on.

Tango, if I place the pump on its lowest setting it does an auto shut-off when the foam hits the nozzle. Use the nozzle to push the black vent switch while slowly pumpting more fuel. When the foam comes to the top and read to spill out--stop! Wait for it to die down. Repeat this process about 20x for the next 5 minutes, until the fuel without foam is resting quietly in the neck of the filler. You have now put in more than 9L since the pump first shut off and most people think the car is full.

Craig: yes, my manual says the same thing. I wanted to find out if my own tank was a little different than what the manual says, and apparently it is.

I put in 16.546 gallons last weekend. That's to close to empty for comfort.
