After putting Jetta VR6 wagon springs, 10mm front spacers and Koni FSD dampers on my Golf, I started looking at larger tires and wheels. I think the 205/60R16 tires on 16 x 6.5 wheels I am about to order should fit just fine, since my car is now riding about 2" higher than before. I know that the extra height hurts cornering, but I'd like to gain that extra bit of clearance for traveling rutted USFS gravel roads. However, I stumbled across an article in a 2008 issue of Popular Mechanics which says that anything beyond +/- a few percent OEM tire diameter can cause ABS and stability control to respond incorrectly in a panic stop or maneuver. Would upsizing from a 25" to a 26.3" diameter tire cause a problem? Have any of you had a near-death experience on account of this? Was the guy who wrote the article the US corporate product liability lawyer for Bosch or Continental? Should I just get these things and proudly reclaim my right to do donuts in icy parking lots?
Oh yeah, I also plan to tow a 1000lb travel trailer - if I can ever get around to finishing rebuilding it. I have an inertial brake controller and the trailer will have brakes...when I finally put them on.
