My son has apparently learned something from me (!). He's looking to buy his first (used) car (privates don't make that much $) and is considering a 2012 JSW TDI. I reviewd this forum and specifically the HPFP fail threads and see that it is majority '09 & '10. Then a general search on 2012 JSW revealed a thread where a 2012 buyer discovered service records indicating an HPFP failure/replacement.

Please reply with your opinion of the actual HPFP risk and whether there are any other serious issues of we should beware. I really appreciate the wisdom of the TDI Club 'hive mind'.

And Happy New Year!

They are covered until 120,000 miles. Either find one with low miles....or one that has had the HPFP changed recently if it makes you feel better. No problems with our 2011 after 110000 miles except the HPFP failure at 40,000 miles.

People on this forum claim HPFP failure to be around 2-3% of the cars. My 2010 JSW has 72000 miles with the only problem being Oxygen sensor replaced under warranty. I use OptiLube Summer+ or EXP just in case the fuel I put in has low lubricity.

Happened on mine at 59k and then again at 73k. I'm almost at 97k now. My friend had a 14' Passat and it went at 21k. So it's all years at all miles.

Mine went at 92K. VWoA picked up the tab. I would not be concerned with this, as they are paying for repairs way out of warranty.

I run a lubricity additive like Howes, or some low ash 2 stroke snowmobile oil, jaso spec fc, or iso-egd. They won't clog the DPF. Not the wal mart outboard oil. That was okay before the DPFs, but not anymore, according to multiple sources I've read anyway.

This HPFP horse has been beat to death, but it's like the lottery. You hae
better odds of having a HPFP failure than winning the lottery by a big
margin. The good news is the odds are long... meaning it's likely you will
not have a problem, and as someone said put some OptiLube in the gas...
(no scientific proof it will help but it does improve lubricity of fuel, it can
not hurt).

The other things that can take the car out for expensive repair.
- DMF (Dual mass flywheel)
- Serpentine Belt taking out timing belt casing internal engine damage
- Turbo failure (expensive by itself) taking out DPF and EGR valve
(more expensive repairs).

There are things you can do about all these things. HPFP replacement
with a different more reliable kind. Replacing the serpentine belt more
frequently or getting a aftermarket guard to protect the timing belt.
The turbo, may be proactive replacement at 80,000 or 120,000 miles
maybe?

I would say if budget and time and ability to work on the car yourself
are factors, I would not get a VW TDI... There are far more reliable
and lower cost cars you can buy. HOWEVER I think it is a great car
when it's working, and with the market soft you may be able to get
a good one for a bargain price. As I said it's like the lottery.

Better yet, keep gas out of your fuel system and you won't need to use workarounds to restore the lubricity.

PLEASE stop using the "G word" (a.k.a. lawnmower fuel) when referring to fuel for a TDI.

So the hpfp issue is not confined to just the 2009 & 2010 models? I only saw a reference to the 09, 10's on the thread on the forum home page.. I am ready to buy a used tdi but still waffling on the yr. Thanks.

HPFP failures are not confined to the 2009/2010 model years. Though rare, they effect the entire lineup. To a much lesser extent on the 2012+ Passat, which benefits from a slightly different system. Personally I would purchase the latest car you can afford that has a good service history.

From what I've heard, on higher mileage vehicles, if the HPFP will fail, it will fail early. I haven't had any problems with my fuel injection system, and I'm at 153K.

*Edit*
I take that back - I had 2 glow plugs go out, so I just replaced all 4 around 90-95K. Had 1 injector go out, and also changed that myself and reprogrammed in VCDS. No problems since.

I did actually contemplate replacing the HPFP around 200K as preventive maintenance (I'm told the actual pump is around $800, plus labor). Maybe when it's time for my next TB change, I'll replace it. I remember when VW sent me a letter extending the warranty on the HPFP to 120K, I was already at 135K. Didn't do me any good, but again, I haven't had any problems. Truly, YMMV.
