Stories when filling up at "gasoline station"

I pulled into the McWerther's Fuel Depot in Delaware, OH this morning. There was a guy working on some of the equipment. He explained to me that one diesel pump had the 1" truck nozzle, one had the gasoline-sized nozzle, and if I had the restrictor in the fuel neck I needed to use pump 10. Turns out he has an '04 and a '13; he gave me contact information for a nearby TDI specialist. The specialist is on the 'guru' list. All in all a great interaction.

In my entire life, all of the times I have been to the pump, I have seen a couple of folks drive away with the pump in their car still and that is literally it. Am I the only one with no stories to tell? Looking at this thread I guess so.

Went to fill up the other day, and had the wife with me (usually don't as she gets impatient with me using a glove, sniffing the nozzle, and topping off).

She was driving and the fist station we went to were not selling fuel as their computers were down. We moved to another just down the road and she pulls up to the Truck pumps. I explain that we cannot use these pumps, and to move over to the other Diesel island. She then gets frustrated and says "Why is it so difficult to get "Gas" for this car.

I just responded this is why I usually get Diesel on my own. It was lost on her........ :)

Had my jetta tdi for over a month and a half now and i've always been the sole diesel fill (car or truck). Finally, last thursday on a trip to pick up gf from Dulles, pulled in to a sheetz on 29n, started to fill. Not a minute into filling, i hear the clack-clack-clack sound and look up to see a passat pulling in on other side of pump. Sure enough, another TDI, looked like a 2010 passat tdi. Topped off and went on my way with no words exchanged. Just nice seeing another one at the pump (still a novel idea to me at this point).

12th Anniversary thread BUMP!!

This favorite TDIclub thread is 12 years old today!

I've said it before and I'll say it again....this thread should be made a Sticky at the top! IIRC, the OP needs to apply for sticky status.

Keep those great TDI fillup stories coming!

Why do you sniff nozzles? o.0
To make sure it smells like Diesel, and not RUG ( I am always extra careful, but after having my HPFP fail, and the dealer accuse me of putting gas in when I could prove I did not) I started the sniff test too. If I don't like the way it smells I move on.

Plus I secretly like the smell :)

I have not had an issue so far, but if it smells in any way like RUG it is worth it to me to go elsewhere.

Ohhhhh. Idk what RUG smells like. I wonder if that would have adverse effects on my engine if it went in by accident. I fill up at the same spot usually, but most of the time I'm not the driver, so...

Diesel actually doesn't taste that bad either. Not great, but not bad. I was syphoning some once and got some in my mouth. Was kinda like cooking oil...sort of.

I don't recall ever tasting Gasoline, so can't do a taste comparison.;)

Gone...
For only the second time since having a CR TDI (2011 Golf), I filled in the US yesterday, in Ellsworth Maine, at an Irving station. Nope, nobody gave me any comments about putting diesel in my car.

All I got for my effort was thoroughly getting soaked due to the pouring rain and wind.

Nobody in Canada ever comments... there are so many TDIs here.

No, man. IDK much about RUG. I only heard/read that RUG is "off road" fuel, the cost is different, it's got a different dye in it and we're not supposed to use it. Most of the time I'm not driving the TDI, so I have to stay up on it with more than usual caution. I can tell you for a fact that anyone else but me that gets in the car would be likely to fill it with gasoline or RUG. We have a local kerosine pump as well, but that one is kind of far off in a carner of the lot and I think it says "KEROSINE" on it and possibly the "Airplane Fuel" sign is still on it. But, I guarantee you that if there's a pump that has a smaller number on it and is diesel, it'll go in the tank. A family member has already filled their car's tank with diesel by mistake. Thankfully they realized it and didn't start the car and had it towed. A friend's parents did the same thing, but they started the car and made it about a 1/4 mile before their car came to an angry sputtering halt. I'm glad you guys are out there looking out for other drivers :) If you see somebody trying to fill my snorlax(my euro plate says that) with something other than regular diesel, please let em know.

votblindub, you're confusing rug with off-road diesel. rug is short for regular gasoline, or the 87 octane stuff. Off-road diesel is the dyed stuff, which can be used in our cars butyou could pay a fairly stiff fine if you're caught. My understanding is that the dye can stay in the fuel lines for many tanks.

j1mbo sniffs the pump nozzle to make sure it has the sweeter diesel smell compared to the gasoline smell.

Actually it is short for "regular UNLEADED gasoline" (which is redundant since there isn't any leaded gasoline anymore). That is why I use RG/MG/PG instead of RUG/MUG/PUG. :D

Ok now I understand. The other guys covered it :) Not a great deal of Off road Diesel around here, but there have been a few instances of the jobber dropping Gas into the Diesel tank (hence the nice long sniff).

Ohhh, yea. I gotcha now. Yea, definitely had stuff confused. I thought you like the smell of diesel. I definitely like that wafting smell of gasoline on a hot day around the pumps. I miss the pumps that were around in Russia. I remember seeing a glass dome near the hose attachment. You could see the fuel sloshing around inside.

That used to be mandatory on pumps in these United States to show fuel was actually being dispensed. They started disappearing in the 60s.

Which is NOT road gasoline. Show me a gasoline station selling it for a daily driver automobile on the roads, streets, highways, and byways of these United States.

"not any leaded gasoline"

Nowhere does it say "taxed leaded gasoline".

While we're on the discussion of little nit picky things, anyone ever notice how red diesel is never cheaper than road diesel by even as much as the road tax adds up to?
Even buying it delivered in quantity it is more than road diesel would be pre-taxes.

I always assumed the extra charge was for the delivery by the grumpy guy that doesn't like to wear the proper personal protection equipment while in site. I love that guy.

When I lived at home on the farm we used to have two huge fuel tanks...one for gas, and one for diesel. Both farm fuel...so colored.
Once in a blue moon we'd have a tanker come in to fill them up. Was much cheaper than at the pump fuel.

The nozzles we had didn't have the auto shut off though...had to listen for when it was done. I was pretty good, don't remember ever spilling any.

Ah, the good old days.....as soon as I was 16 I got my license and roamed the roads a lot. (I may have roamed the roads a bit before that, but nothing my parents ever knew about.:) Certainly drove around the farm for years before that, just the roads were off limits.)

96' Passat Wagon
Years ago I was on a road trip from Albuquerque to San Diego,Ca. I stopped at a "Gas Station" rather than A truck stop for no other reason than it was close to the ocean, which I miss.
I opened the rear storage compartment of my Passat Wagon and realized my fuel additive stash was empty.
I walked into the office and bought a pint of Automatic Transmission Fluid ( don't start!) and walked back to the car. I was the only customer at the station at the time and could feel "eyes on me".
I poured the contents into my tank and walked over to the trash can to get rid of the empty bottle.
Two employees came out of the office and proceeded to tell me what an idiot I was for dumping the fluid into my engine and not the transmission. They thought for sure I was going to kill my engine.
I tried to explain it was a Diesel and the ATF will keep my pump and injectors clean.
The two were still bad mouthing me and shaking their heads as I drove off.
I made sure to wind up the Turbo and pop the clutch and did a nice four wheel drift onto the thoroughfare. They made my day.
I sure hope they did not breed.
