yeah I am still debating driving out Saturday morning or Friday night...after work.. coming from North Jersey looks like a 7 or 8 hour drive.

I'd do Friday night, but that's just me; I'm heading up on Tuesday morning. More time in Maine is a good thing!

Didn't I hear rumblings about a special bonus pack for registrant #43??:p

I'm excited. Itinerary is set. Fuel stops tentatively scheduled. Extraneous adventures/journeys plotted. ~2,800 miles in 6 days. WOO! I'm used to 1,000 miles/week, but this is gonna be big.

Anyone have any tips for staying awake during these long drives, besides slapping yourself in the face?

Stop for a 20 minute nap somewhere or get a really nasty drink and nurse it along. I've spent a ton of time doing this while hiking the NH48 in winter as day trips. Many times I'd get up at 3 or 4 AM, drive 3 hours to the White Mountains, hike and climb all day with snowshoes or crampons and a pack, then come down and drive 3 hours home and arrive back between 11 and midnight.

I was pretty tired this morning, after getting only 5 hours of sleep this morning. A Belgian waffle and some coffee got me up and running. 8 more hours to go!

Stay hydrated.

I like to keep beef jerky with me on road trips, because eating it helps me stay awake.

Loud music can help.

Uncomfortably cold HVAC settings can help.

Podcasts that make you think can help.

A passenger that you can talk with can help, even if they can't take co-driving duties.

I noticed on one long drive talk radio kept me up, I'm debating playing some movies on my radio for the trip.

Ready to make last-minute plans? For those of you wondering, registration is still open, including admission to food events - the deadline has been extended until 09:00 AM (US/East) tomorrow. :)

3 words: Five Hour Energy. The stuff WORKS. Drink one of those little bottles when the sleepies just start sneaking up on you. In about 20 mins, you are awake. No jitters, no sugar crash later - just awake when you need to be.

Yes! This stuff does work, but it only works ONCE. Use it wisely, because after it wears off, you are done for. If you take a second one, effects are unpleasant and you'll feel pretty strung out.
