Well I ordered a new one for $120, free shipping. The new ones come with
heat shield and should be ridged.

I was going to modify my old one, add a few more support attachments
and bond on some stiffeners.

Took it out and it was designating and limp as a noodle, nasty and heavy. I
assume it absorbed moisture or engine fluids. The new one should be nice.
I may still add a few more attachments.

Can go with out, but the insulation does make it a little more quiet and
protects hood from high temp.

The old one weights 31 ounces and the new one 13.4 ounces. The old one has exposed insulation that is disgusting making dust, nasty. The new one is ridged (with metal heat shield) and the old one is like a wet noodle with insulating crumbling and heavy. I highly recommend. I paid less than $130 to the door. It came in a large box shipped flat.

Old top two, with exposed insulation,
new bottom two.... with covering on both sides.
Recommend repair... worth it.....

That's exactly the same what my 1.6 TDI came out of factory with.
However, sad there's no headshield above the DPF. That area gets really hot. Under certain weather conditions you can see that with naked eye.

Yep when I saw Heat shield before I bought the insulation, I thought the
heat shield would be back passenger side, over the turbo.... I get it and it's
front where it is fairly cool, intake side. Screw up? For gas car?

At this point I am thrilled to get rid of that old insulation blanket. It is
disintegrating. Everywhere I put it a pile of dust came off. The insulation just
crumbles and comes off to the touch. I don't want to bash German
Engineering, but what the heck. I guess the old one had some great sound
dead'ing properties. However I did not notice any difference with the
blanket out, which is how I drove it for a few weeks.

Anyone have a link to the best price. I'm not finding anything below $135+shipping.

What year did VW start putting these new hood insulators on the cars?

Yes google and $135 is about right. What is up with your handle lower case 'God'. I find it offensive and against forum policy.

Why do you ask? What difference does it make. It's not an expensive of involved upgrade. My 2010 had the fat saggy mat. It is obvious what you have by looking at it.
