Jetta 2002 TDi
i,
Need your help.

I have a 2002 TDi Jetta with 300,000 miles. Strong battery. Car runs well.... for about 5-10 miles!
Then it cuts off. And wont start. Pull off to the side of the road.
Starts again after about 6 hours.

Once running, it Runs great. (3/4 Full tank and strong battery. Good D2 fuel from regular pump)

The only other hint is that the Speedometer is not working at all, even after I replaced the sensor with a cheap chinese ebay $15 one.( Might not be connected perfectly well)
Also-the fuel gauge sways from middle to 3/4 full.
When the car starts after a few days of standing, good amount of smoke comes out the exhaust, and then the whole time the air is smelling of fuel while it runs or idles.

No-one can figure it out.
A local mechanic looked at it and said it is the Fuel injection Pump. (I had it resealed about 5 years ago.) Car has No visible leaks.
A new fuel pump +install is about the value of the car.
I don't want to get rid of it!
If there is the possibility of reconditioning the FUEL INJECTION PUMP myself , I will.

Any advice appreciated. been at this for 8 months.
