I recently purchase a 2004 TDI manual, has 92000 miles.:)
Do I need to replaced the timing belt?
What does A4 means? I see that often in different discussions.
I am not familiar with VW plataform or engineering.
I also read that 2004 model has two different diesel engines it is truth?
What belt brand will you recomend? do I need to change something else besides the belt?
Thanks

"A" refers to the platform used for the Golf, Jetta, and New Beetle. "4" refers to the fourth generation.

Look up KROUT in the search function. He's in Jacksonville. A bit of a drive but it's worth it to get it fixed RIGHT. You're good to 100K miles.

The timing belt is due for replacement at any time, but not later than 100k miles.

Visit www.dieselgeek.com and look at the parts in their deluxe TB kit for your model/year. Those at the parts that need to be replaced: TB, tensioner, rollers, waterpump, single-use bolts, and the serpentine belt. The DG kit has a few extras. Other TDIClub vendors sell similar kits, these include www.metalmanparts.com, www.tdiparts.com, www.boraparts.com, and a handful of others. They all sell kits with good parts, differing mainly in which brand of waterpump they include.

I strongly recommend that you do NOT allow a VW dealership to do this work for you, not let some local mechanic without TDI experience practice on your engine. You will save money and probably get better workmanship by having a TDIClub "guru" install the kit for you. Krout in Jacksonville is one of them, but there may be others.

There were two different TDI engines in 2004: a 2.0-liter engine in the Passats, and a 1.9-liter engine in everything else.
