I was messing around on the net reading about vag com and came across a site that had a vag com key gen, so I downloaded it on my computer (desktop) to give it a try and it worked. I already have a vag-com on my laptop but just wanted to see if this worked. I cant believe it, Ross-tech is gonna get screwed.

You may find that "Worked" is a relative thing. Just because it says "Fully Registered / Activated" on the About screen doesn't mean it really works. Most of the guys in Eastern Europe who generate these "hacks" don't bother testing their work on actual cars..:)

We generally become aware of these hacks within days of them being released. Most of them are flawed and easily detectable. Now ask yourself if you trust the output from a "hacked" version? Think of the time and money you could waste chasing bogus fault codes..:)

Uwe,
I applaud your bag of tricks. I can't think of a better way to punish hackers and pirates than to quietly send them on their own, self-induced, wild goose chase. Priceless.

If it's a keygen using your software just to get free access to your database, then yes I trust it.

Not to say I would, but don't try to make it seem like the hacked version / use of keygens is full of virii or will give you bogus information just because it's hacked.

None now. Former: 2011 335d, 2010 Jetta TDI, 2003 Jetta TDI Wagon. 99.5 Jetta TDI, 98 NB TDI, 3 different black 96 Passat TDI wagons.
I know TDI guys are frugal (I won't say cheap), but I continue to be amazed why someone wouldn't spend $200 and change to get the real thing. Do you have any idea what the real VAG tool would cost if Uwe hadn't spent his time writing this code?
Of course, people rip off other artists (like Metalnerd for example) so I'm not surprised.

Spend the money and support the author, I say!

I did purchase a cad package (Catia) from overseas a few years ago, it's a $20K program and I paid $80 shipped. Full version too!

I paid full price for a company that supports the guy like me(and I think it was a great deal). I couldn't be happier. If we don't support the vendors on this site, then the VW Dealer will be alot happier!
Next time, please send me a free laptop with the product, and throw in a new TDI.

I agree completely. People earn their living by developing software and they should be paid for their work. How bout you went to work for a week and your company decided to pay you for 4 hours because they found a loophole. And you're stuck working for them for the next 5 years because of some contract thing.

Just work it out in your mind about being fair to others and how you would feel in the same situation.

Remember, if it's to good to be true, it probably is. And even if it works is it morally correct to do.

Sigh. If anyone should be supported, it's the independent software people. They make niche products that no big business would spend time on. Where would we be without VAGCOM? Seriously, imagine that, because it will happen if these people can't afford to keep developing.

I can't beleive that someone would want to hack a program that only cost you $200. This software is way under priced IMHO. I have other scan tools like the GM Tech II and that goes for $3600 right now. You can't do a thing without these tools and $200 is already like stealing it.

I also find it quite brazenly brave that someone would openly admit to possessing hacked software before the very author of the software in the same thread, and others justifying the practise...

I neither possess the hacked software nor am justifying the practice. I'm just sick of the bull%#%#@ spewed by software writers "well the hacked version will ruin your car lol" dude it access the same database and error codes, it just bypasses your registration.

I'm against it but don't bull$(#)$* us.

Software companies will always tell you the hacked versions are bad. If they say there is nothing wrong with them, then people wont even worry about using them. It all comes down to how the crack functions that will determine its possible effects on the program.

I havent paid for most of my software(but I did buy vag-com) http://sourceforge.net

It's morally wrong to steal software that someone spent time developing. They deserve payment for their work.

Does this justify lying?

Sorry, just had to chime in here...

I don't pay for most of my software either - but none of it is cracked or stolen: Sourceforge.net is an open-source software development site where TONS of very useful software can be had for no cost, per the authors wishes. You should check it out.

And yes, I did pay for my vag com (HEX com actually).
