Last tank of winterised diesel! I pulled a trailer 150 miles to WI to pick up a blade for my John Deere. 45MPG going out emtpy, 40 on the return trip.
This was also the most I have put in at one time (but not by much) 38 miles passed the light.

A new record....best tank I have ever had with this car! My MFD was reading 62 mpg for a while driving up 495 from VA....gotta love it!

My very first 700+ mile tank! Best mileage I've ever gotten. I drive no more than 60mph and it has made a 4-5 mpg difference from when I used to drive 75-80mph. I went from filling up every 11 days to every 14 days and with diesel being $4.80 a gallon here in upstate NY, every little bit helps. When I get my IM cleaned, I expect my first 50+mpg tank and possibly 800 miles.

About 400 miles highway, the rest was sort of local bumming around. The local short runs pulled down the MPG, but not as far as I expected. The gassers are for the moment parked so the TDI is seeing everything.

Crappy milage, Help!

Hi, this is my first post. I've looked thru many of the posts in the past and have just been baffled by the milage that many of you are posting, and wondering what I am doing wrong! I don't drive excessivly hard, I change may air filter about every 5k, same with my oil and oil filter. I just switched to LUBROMOLY Synthetic and and new Bosch fuel filter @ 35k. I have a 2005 Golf TDI with a 5sp manual and am only averaging about 37MPG. I live in Denver, Co. Is the altitude to blame, do I need some mods? I was thinking about putting in a new 5th gear but wasn't sure what size. I do a lot of driving around 75-80mph. Any help would be greatly appreciated

The speed limit in our hiways in Colorado are 65 and in the country 75. So, by no means am I speed or have a lead foot. Having many european friends, my speeds are in line with what they are driving over there, so I think the american mentality comment is just ignorant!

Ski - this thread is for the mileage tracking - Please start another thread if you want to discuss how to increase your MPG - or better yet - do some reading on older threads that have covered this subject.

But your mileage is NOT out of line for the way you have been driving. If you want to raise your mileage - the simplest thing is to SLOW DOWN.

All on mine. Took a little trip to Iowa (from central Texas.) I had 107 miles on tank when I left. Had to stop in Eagleville, MO on that tank. The next 2 tanks were running around IA, eating, seeing family, and starting home via AR. (2nd fill in Newton, IA; 3rd in Conway, AR) The 4th was when I got home so I could see how I did overall on the trip. Not too shabby: 53.817 MPG

I probably won't fill again this month. Time to play with my other new toy for awhile, the Rialta RV.

This next tank was filled with Shell Premium Diesel, *very* little foam I noticed. A nice change.

Light had just come on.

Significant effort in driving for fuel economy - lots of engine off coasting. Found a new location to coast an additional 1.0 miles and has one less stoplight on my daily commute so that helps out I think. Few dips into the RC6, a few rainy days, and some chilly mornings mitigated the gains a bit. Should be able to improve on this once it gets warmer out

Next tank is all with a trailer in tow and will be down in the low 40's.

And holding true to the predictions...

500 miles of trailer pulling - 250 @ 75 MPH, 250 @ 65 MPH all at ~800 lb average.
200 miles of generally beating on it, couple 100 MPH sprints, using the power a lot
I was pretty impressed with the relatively low EGT's and decent mileage while pulling the trailer. First test with the new turbo/tune pulling trailer and it did very well. Real test will be the next trip with a ~2500lb load.

Another 1k tank. I would have put more miles on, but I was
going by a Sunoco station that had diesel for $4.129. Everyone else in the area was $4.39.
I picked up my .681 gearset at Impexfest, but I can't find anyone to install it!
BTW, this tank was from Raleigh to Baltimore and back and then to central South Carolina 50% red roads, and 50% Blue.

Each of these entries are a combined of two in keeping with the request in the first post for a single submission of a combined fuel use and distance for the month.
So if you want to wait and post all of your tanks in MAY at once, it would be greatly appreciated
I realize it's only the 15th of the month, but I expect that the next fillings will not be until into June.
If I do need to add another entry this month, I apologise in advance to Scoopershd for making him work harder to accomodate me.

AC trials and a rear window defroster surprise

Driver: BioBob
Miles: 684
Gallons: 11.667
Model Yr: 2003
Model: Bora
Tranny: 5m (no gear install yet)
Fuel Type: ULSD

MPG : 58.62

My first tank under 60 in the last 8, but I wanted to so some AC testing as I was curious about how big a hit you take when you turn the AC on. Steady speed of 60, 30 mile continuous runs on I95. (30 miles AC, 30 Miles no AC). On full blast (4) 2.5 mpg hit! Even on low (1) it was 3/4 MPG.
The big surprise was the rear window defroster 3.5 MPG to run it! Why is there not a timer on it? Is there a timer available as an option? This is the only car I have ever owned where the defroster will stay on continuosly.

This makes me think I should kill my DRL's but my car color says leave them on (Platinum Grey)

Gears go in next week. Will do a fill just prior to install.

cost per mile: 0.081 cents:rolleyes: Best mpg I've made this spring, but rapid increase in diesel cost, $4.65/gal. this time, mitigates my effort. Still, there is no question I am better off with this car than any hybrid or gasser.
