Since links to other sites get broken, and even links within those other sites get broken, I've got pictures here of installation on an estate/variant/wagon model.

A diode was put in line with the wire going to the rear light assembly. Banded end towards the light assembly. Another diode replaced the existing wire jumper found on the '04-05 bulb holder. Banded end towards the bottom bulb as pictured.

This retained the brake light function of the lower light. The in-line diode prevents feedback to the fog light indicator in the cluster (yes, I wired to it too) when the brakes are applied. The bulb is not a high wattage bulb, and this is not a high voltage application. Radio Shack 276-1101 (two 1N4001 diodes) at $0.59 + tax are sufficient.

I could have added insulation to the diode leads but it is positioned away from the surface of the hold and nothing is going to bother it.
