I was looking at an aircraft magazine. A aircraft maker is using Mercedes Benz diesel car engines minus EPA items. The interesting part is the engine is rated at 1500 hours and they expect to raise it to 2000 hours before requiring an overhaul, however the high pressure pump is only rated for 600 hours. Not sure how Jet A compares to df2.

They talk about how Diesel engines will become more common.

Thielert was converting MB engines for Diamond aircraft, and made some conversions for Cessna 172 and 182 models, and possibly others.
It was mostly a disaster. Thielert ended up going bankrupt and some execs were under indictment.
Diamond was in a bind for an engine supplier and developed Austro engines mostly on its own to keep offering a diesel version that would run on jet A since avgas is very expensive in Europe.
SMA is another manufacturer of compression aircraft engines.
SMA is the manufacturer of the new JetA powered Cessna Skylane being introduced this year.
Auto based engines don't have a lot of success in aircraft for a variety of reasons.

The Austro Engines full takeoff power (100% load) is limited to 5 minutes (like almost every other aircraft, including jets), maximum continous power 92% load.

The older Thielert engines allowed 100% load continous operation.

Note: The RPM on the engine display refer to propellers RPM.

DA42-VI review

DA42 NG (Austro) Aircraft Flight Manual

DA42 TDI (Thielert) Aircraft Flight Manual

An even newer version of DA42 consumes as little as 13 L / 100 km or 18 MPG statue (jet fuel) at 155 KTAS (287 km/h or 178 mph TAS) and high altitude.

At maximum continous power (92%), about 17.3 L / 100 km or 13.6 MPG statue at about 190 KTAS (352 km/h or 219 mph TAS) at FL160 (4.88 km).
