What's draining the battery?

Bought a well-maintained 2001 Golf and are generally satisfied. However, something is running the battery dead, and there's no obvious culprit. No interior lights left on etc. It even ran down a brand new battery just sitting in the yard. Considered the possibility that the GPS, installed in tape deck, could be the problem, so made sure it's disengaged when not in use - that's not it. Any ideas?

If you have a multimeter and know how to measure current, you could connect the multimeter to the battery and remove fuses one by one. You also may have to disconnect the alternator, starter to rule them out as well. There are lots of posts regarding this..... If your not comfortable with using a multimeter then a trip to a dealer is in order....
