How far have you gone on a single tank of fuel in your 09 Jetta TDI? My best is 613 miles, 50% highway, 25% suburbs, and 25% city driving.

My best is about 570 miles, 600 miles is definitely do-able. I have to confess though, that was on a roadtrip with like 80% highway.

I didn't keep track of milage/tank when I went on a 750 miles road trip 90% freeway, but I did record 49 mpg which works out to around 650. However, since then I have kept track. I regularly get 530 miles between fill ups.

My best tank (actual calc) has been 48.5 mpg. Several times I've filled up around 640 miles, but at that point it's beginning to make me nervous.

Currently have 42K on the car.

635.2 Miles, using 14.408 Gallons, working out to 44.1 US MPG. Was about 60/40 hwy/city.
The Trip Computer said I had 20 or 25 Miles left. Fuel Gauge was just a hair above E when I got fuel.

My best MPG Ever, was 45.7, so I know I can get higher, just need longer road trips to do it.

On a road trip, I got to 1000 kms (620 miles) when I filled up... based on amount left on the guage and the MFD read out I could have made just over 700 miles. That was 100% highway, with a few stops along the way... I need a 700 mile bladder!

1011.15km (628 mi) is my current best and that wasn't pushing it too badly.

I know I have gone ~140km (87mi) past the fuel light coming on. (Should have wrote down exactly how far I went so I know for the future).

On a long trip, I think 1030km (640mi) is definitely achievable without much trouble.

I got just under 750 on a tank, but it was aided by going down a mountain pass, then driving through flat desert. I averaged about 600 miles per tank.

Just picked up a 2010, and the first tank averaged 40mpg. Salesman said they did make some ECU changes(programming??) and that the 2010 should get a shade better mileage. Whether that is true or not, I have no idea.

664 miles on a tank

My best is 664 miles on a tanks, back and forth to work, 90% interstate. 62-63 mph on interstate. I put 14.6 gallons in a fill up.

I got 46.5 MPG calculated doing 560 miles on a tank I still had 100 miles left acording to the MFD, gas light wasn't on either. I wasn't driving for economy either, 75-80 most of the time. Hard not to stay in the left lane. MFD commonly displays trip avg of 50MPG but we all know how true it is.

My best was 715 miles on a tank (required 14.1 gallons to fill = 51 mpg) but think I should out-do that on my current tank. My previous record was 80% driving at 55 mph.

I've been continuing to learn how to maximize my mileage - what amazes me is the incredibly low resistance the tires have - I can coast for a half a mile without losing much speed. Makes me think about replacing the tires on my gasser to newer tires that offer lower rolling resistance.

I also think my car's engine seems to be performing better as diesel enthusiasts have promised (though my first tank was my record one - probably because I was driving really cautiously).

my best tank has been 45.5 calc manually.. I don't play the miles per tank
game as i live rural. So when my light comes on i usually find a pump.
don't want to get stuck to prove a point if you get my drift.
best trip on the dash has been 47.8..all in all pretty happy with the JSW.
One must baby it otherwise mid to high 30's..

605 miles on one tank 45.5 AVG, only really drove for economy the last half of the tank, which saw the MFD display 52MPG. I just don't drive highway enough to see a 50 MPG a tank, maybe one of these days.

how many gallons are you guys putting when you fill up? low fuel level light comes on and the most I have put in is 13.8gallons. Its hard to see how much more I can fill up. I used to fill up to about 2in from brim of filler neck on the duramax I had.

Filled up today in Lebanon, IN. 534.6 miles and 11.563 gallons. 46.3 mpg average on the #2 MFD (reset for each tank). 46.23 hand calculated. This tank was BP. There was a quarter tank left on the gauge. Mixed driving, much of it interstate and freeway. I usually drive fairly conservatively (but not always). I think I could get 50+ on a tank if I did one long 600+ mile trip and kept it at the "sweet spot", weather, terrain and other factors cooperating, of course.

615 miles on a trip from Ohio to North Carolina. Normal driving getting 44 MPG. 700 miles??? Not likely unless I'm driving 40 mph across Kansas. I would shoot myself after an hour of trying something like that. I'll stick to normal driving and having some fun with the car. I think I will add "A-type personality" to my signature line. vrooom! vrooom!

I refuse to believe that people are getting over 600 miles on a tank. They must be driving like granny going 55 mph. The old TDI's you could easily get 680. My 2009 TDI can only get around 550.

You don't need to drive like granny to get 600 Miles/tank. Once the car is warmed up I almost always run it off the line, like a drag race. Now I rarely speed. I do the speed limit almost always as well. My last 8 Fill-ups have been over 540 Miles/tank. 2 of those were over 600, 1 of them was 1.1 Miles away, and 5 out of the last 8 would have made 600 Miles, but I filled up early.

If I drove like granny, (I'm willing to bet I would be breaking 700 Miles/Tank easilly, but I have too much fun with the torque.

Oh, my work commute is about 11 miles, at 60mph (thats the speed limit) and my highway trips are typically 250-500 miles at 65mph.

600 is possible

stuckless-

Yes, it's possible. If you just bought your 2009 tdi, then it hasn't broke-in yet. My tank average since I bought the car is 555 miles/tank. I've been getting about 560 to 575 miles per tank with my daily driving to/from work which is only 23 miles one way. The car finally warms up and runs efficiently as I get to work. Longer drives = better MPG's. You'll get there.

Those getting 700+ miles per tank have to be manual tranny's (not DSG's) and as you said "driving like granny going 55". I can't see another 100 miles per tank in my car, but I won't say never.

70 mph is the speed limit on non-urban stretches of interstate in Indiana. Good luck maintaining that with cruise control. The speed limit on other highways is 65, 60, but mostly 55. We have a lot of country highways in the Hoosier state. And lots of small towns, and lots semis, grannies, tractors, Amish buggies, deer -- and lots of cops. I'd be curious if those folks who say they drive fast all time would keep track of their average mph per tank on the #2 MFD. I'd like see what the numbers were. I drive lots of highway miles but my average speed is always slower than I would have predicted. My point here is all that accelerating and braking takes its toll on fuel economy. I'm always pleasantly surprised when I get to set the cruise on the interstate and not be interrupted (which is quite rare). And my DSG seems to do just fine.

I suspected 700 miles was possible after getting 613 miles with some traffic jams and city driving. I look forward to getting 700 miles with longer runs and more highway driving.

Tarbe and MarkShort1958 thanks for confirming my suspicions. Congratulations are in order:

I've been thoroughly disappointed with the mileage being returned by my 2009. I've owned 4 diesel jettas since 2002 and know how to drive a diesel. I haven't been able to get more than 700 KM (about 440 milies) to a tank and I'm at about 12,000 KM so far. I completely understand the break in process and that it should improve as I approach 40-50K KM's but I'm very close to selling it and buying a 2003 (again).

I don't think you really believe what your saying thepress83. I've also owned diesels for a hell of a long time. I agree, 2009 are not the best mpg wise. But this car is by far better than anything VW has done over the last 25 years!. The problem is, the car is so powerful, that there is always this temptation to press the pedal down the floor to feel the thrust.
Unless you drive 100 000 miles per year, the difference in mpg won't make a big difference in your wallet at the end of the year.
We all have pride when we get these terrific scores. But admit, you've got one of the best cars on the market between your hands.

I understand your frustration. My mpg has dropped recently for some unknow reason, and this kind of upsets me also. But I'm sure it's going to come back.

Yes, I am a tad confused also. The EPA for the 03 Jetta TDI was 42 C / 49 H combined ? My range has been from 44 to 62 mpg. The EPA for the 09 Jetta TDI was 29/30 C / 40 H combined? I have the DSG and the range has been from 39 to 46.71 mpg. So what about an EPA of 12 mpg to 9 mpg LESS was mis represented? The less mpg is also the PRICE for 90 hp/155# vs 140 hp/236 hp or 53% more hp and # ft of torque.

Thanks for the feedback guys however my Jetta has 16,000 miles now so it's broken in. I just got 47 mpg last night with no air conditioning going 58 mph. But I am still convinced the 2005 and 2006 TDI's are better with not 90 hp but 100 hp and 175 tourque. WIth the 2006 TDI I could go 75 and still get 48 mpg but no way can a 2009 or 2010 going 75 get 48 mpg.

winter belend diesel will drop your FE just a bit, also being colder doesn't help, dense cold air and the time to get up to NOT will hurt you a little bit.
