does any one near Hamilton have a bearing puller like this one that I could borrow next weekend before I buy one
Thanks
PS Canadian Tire and parts source seem to have stopped loaning tools
I just bought a inner tie rod tool for this weekend

slightly OT - is it possible for us to do a bearing in place with a kit like that 1?
Yes it would be.

I have never used this kit, but done many front bearings. On the VW I use a modified (made to be heavier duty) slide hammer to get the bearing out

I would use a piece of wood and a heavy hammer to get it most of the way. as it gets flush with the knuckle, I use the old bearing race.

I would buy the kit if you want to do it 'easily', I think this kit helps get the hub back in as well, you have to be careful to support the inner race properly when putting the hub back in. I would love the kit, I just don't want to spend $200(they used to be $300+) Haven't done a wheel bearing on the jetta in over 3 years, so its not a tool that would get a lot of use for me anymore.

how do you get it back in
After you are successful in removal of the bearing in the hub, replacement is simple.
Put new bearing in freezer for an hour to shrink it then drop it into the hub.
