Since I have purchased a TDI, I am looking at swapping my OEM radio with a Navigation system. I have found OEM Nav's on ebay but was wandering how good they really are. I'm not sure about the aftermarket versions. Here is a link to a sweet one I found on the internet. (You don't have to download thel language pack)

Here are pics of an install from someone who purchased it. I'm not sure how complicated it is, but he sure is going deep into the circuit board.

Any thoughts on any Nav systems out there?

Those are aftermarket and in most folks eyes around here are "Junk"
I bought one a few years ago from Steve Z1, he sells used and new Factory units!

$1650 is alot for a nav system.. I wonder how much the used ones are. Ebay has OEM used Nav systems for around $600 with shipping, including warranty. That's why I started this thread, to get ideas on what's out there and who has aftermarket systems that they really love, and possibly pics.

Volkswagen's factory nav system is pretty bad. So bad, I have to use a TomTom.

Apparently you haven't used the RNS-510 yet :)

Go with the RNS-510. I've used Tom Tom, and various levels of Garmins from the Nuvi 205 up to the 765t with traffic and lane guidance.

Forget everything you hated about the MFD2 and check out the RNS. It's in a different league. It has traffic via Sirius, lane guidance, dynamic routing (i.e. - routes you around traffic congestion.), a built in HDD for maps and music, Sirius, HD Radio, and will play DVD movies.

Check with Peter in Chicago. He's got the best deals and best support available on these things.

There are just too many to list....
I have not tinkered much with the newest ones, no, only to say that the system Toyota was using 5 years ago is still much better (easier, more intuitive) to use.

Once you get used to it, I'm sure it has decent enough ability, but when you actually have to stop and think about how to work the darn thing the novelty of having it becomes just that: a novelty.

BMW's I-drive system is of course at the bottom of the barrel in terms of user-friendliness.

And my $99 TomTom is still faster, cheaper, easier, and finds its way just as well IMHO. :D

I did have a B5 customer in here this year for an upgrade that had an aftermarket in dash unit that looked and functioned just like the previous gen Toyota systems... meant to ask him about it but never did. Same graphics and everything, and for the life of me I cannot remember the brand name but it was a well-known one. Panasonic would seem logical as much of that stuff is used in Toyotas.

I have had factory Navs in 2 of my last 3 TDI's although not an RNS 510......
I presently have a Garmin 885T and it is far superior to any of the Factory nav units I have had.........In fact I am picking up my new 2010 Jetta Sportwagen tomorrow and intentionally saved 1800.........by not ordering a Nav system..........My Garmin has Bluetooth and traffic and lane info and music and will serve my purposes just fine

There have been alot of problems with the waywell 6050. Screen flickering in the cold and internal mic is poor.

I originally bought a Witson W2-D723V, but then sold it because of the poor internal mic and bought an Audiosources AS7608 with external mic.

This is it in my 2009 TDI

You can also use IGO8 GPS software, which you can customize.

Very happy with it.

BTW...I do not sell these or have any relationship with any company that manufacturers units like these.

That is sweet. How much did that cost you? How is the navigation sytem here in the U.S. Does it use disks or do you upload the navgation database. Also, was it just a simple swap, plug n play, or did you have to buy a serperate wiring harness?

Thanks

The GPS runs off an SD card and runs IGO8.

Paid $485 shipped.

No separate wiring harness as the system is plug and play.

Everything but the GPS software is part of the GUI system.

Check out this bad boy.

So do they send the SD card preloaded with the us maps? Where and how can this get updated? Being dumb here, what is the GUI system? Where did you get this for $485 shipped?

You can buy the sd card with US maps for $10, but don't bother as they are very basic with no POI's.

Read up at http://www.gpsunderground.com/forums/index.php Under the IGO8 section. Plenty of people willing to help.

GUI is the software built into the unit.

You can buy these at

http://www.audiosources.net/clsproducts.asp?classid=289

I also had a stand lone before this. Navagon 2100 and it was a very good unit. While the aftermarket units for the Jetta's don't have TMC, the other features IMO are better and I can live with TMC.

What happens when you first try to use Navigation in the US? Does it even have a data base setup, or do you have to buy or download this seperately? I went to the IG08 gps forums, and man I am confused.

Thanks

Yeah I saw you over at the forum. The forum and info can be confusing since there are a number of diff IGO8 versions.

Anyway, if you're interested buy the unit. "People" will help you with the programming.

You have to email to get the price, and they will get you an invoice where you can pay paypal. I just ordered the HD-7608 for my Jetta. The standard AS-7608 is around $438 which incluces shipping and paypal fees. The newer HD-7608 is $20 more, but won't be available until around DEC 20th.
