TDI mechanic recommendation for IL or MI

I recently purchased a 1997 Passat TDI with 51000 miles and I am scouting around for an experienced TDI mechanic in the Chicago, IL SW suburban area or the South Haven, MI area. I spend equal time in each place. I expect to be changing the timing belt soon and a considering doing the job myself if I can work with someone who has done it. Alternatively, I would look for a mechanic who can do the job for a reasonable price.

If I did it myself, what is the possiblity of renting the tools from someone?
