Hello All,

Has anyone heard of "The Source" located at 49 Milvan drive in Weston. Are they reputable. This shop was recommended to me by a client of mine to troubleshoot my car.

Thanks!

Troubleshoot your car? Not sure what's wrong with your car, but "The Source" is a wrecker which deals specifically in VW and Audi parts. It is NOT a garage. I could have sworn that "The source" is on Toryork Drive, though. If you look them up on Canada 411, their address says Milivan, but their map in the ad says Toryork. Did they move?

Anyhow, they are a great source of parts from wrecked vehicles, but unless they've gone into the repair business, you won't be able to do much troubleshooting there.

Last time I was there it was on Toryork Drive, been there a few times, good on his return policy too.

Guess I haven't been there in a while, can someone confirm if they moved?

Yes they did move about a 2 months ago. They have a bigger and nicer place now. Lots of parts stored inside.
No they do not do any repairs but will all ways give you an advice.

hmmm...thanks guys.

I should find out tomorrow why the shop is taking my car there then. More than likely I will use another shop that has been suggested by other forum members.

Thanks for your replies!

if your trouble shooting your car then try to find someone in guelph to give you a hand. i know there a few guys that are more than capable to at least diagnose your problem and they'll only charge you a coffee!
i hope im not over stepping here but try to instant message jasonp(posted in your thread!) here as i know he has a vag-com(diagnostic computer program) and is a great and helpful man located in guelph.

Mike at the source is a very stand up guy! He once quoted me a price that was cheaper than Billy at friscos and when I told him that his price was really decent he dropped even more by $5.00 I know it's not alot, but it's a very nice gesture! I've dealt with him many times as I am on my 5th VAG vehicle. I know he has a VAGCOM and two hoists in the back for dismantling. Once when I had a MAF problem and I explained it to him and he diagnosed my issue via VAGCOM in order to sell me the correct part to resolve my Issue not sure if he's actually INTO mechanic work though. Oh and he is on milvan used to be on toryork they are both in the same city block and maybe thats why some people may think he's in the same place.
I'd definately recommend him for parts but I'm honestly not sure about service.

Thanks for the info.

The MAF was changed again (3-4th time now). Guess what! It came back on again after around 50 km or so. I cannot wait till I meet up with Jason to look at it via the Vag Com.

Ben, I managed to muddle through the convertion process and got the screen shots to appear as jpegs.

Here you go guys, someone with more techno-dorkiness will be able to decipher the info better than I will.

Unfortunately I was very limited to scanning due to the fact I only have the KEY-COM cable and not the HEX-USB cable.

If you were looking to test the MAF, you need to log the data while driving. Do a full run in 3rd gear and watch to make sure the 'requested' and 'actual' match.

Thanks Nigel, was confirming the MAF and EGR are functioning , the MAF does seem to read low at idle and the EGR peeks over 100% does that sound right?
My duty cycle is now only at 4.8% , checked it today.

Thanks for the window MOD too, love it.

Ben if you want sometime we can spin the wheels and log some readings.

FYI
This car sounds off, like timing or over fueling and quasi rogh idle, not considering the DMF chattering.
I did get ti=o look at the IQ and looked to be in the range of 3.6-3.8 but no way of checking timing.
Injector voltage was good, within the specs, only cyl 3 was in the plus, I'm guessing it's lift needle feedback or something, but all were -0.2 to -0.4 or so.

Ben feel free to add the backstory on you replacemnet parts/repairs.

Ok Back story...

Back in Sept/Oct of 2009 I had the timing belt, water pump, tensioner and pulley changed. About a month (or so) later I had the CEL light come on. It threw a P0101 (MAF error code).

Upon inspection the turbo was clogged so I had it cleaned and replaced the MAF. Light came back on! Brought it to another shop and they changed the "cooler for exhaust re-circulation" as the old one had carbon build up and had a pivoting arm that was seized up. Another MAF. CEL light was reset and came back on again. This was in November.

Beginning of January I had the car hooked up to a motor vac (I believe) to decarbonize the car. This was done only for a couple hours. Again light came on. I brought the car back to the shop to have them cycle the motor vac for a full day so as to hopefully remove all the build up (at least that was the intention).

Apparently this was not done and the shop brought the car to 2 more "specialists" to inspect. Found out that the shop took the car to the dealer and they yet again changed the MAF and WAYYYYY overpriced the job. Yet again the light came on.

Which brings me to meeting up with JasonP to hook the car up to his VAG.

Today I brought the car to EMT to discuss the car. The owner was nice and will look at the car this Monday. He suspects that it is a cam/valve issue, which the 06 TDI is known for (engine is noisy). He also suspects that I might have a programming issue (too rich an air/fuel mixture). I had my car chipped by Technine back in Nov. 2006.

I will also have him replace the transmission fluid and filter.

Question: What is a reasonable price to have this work done? I would like some feedback about EMT. Are they reputable and fair? Are their performance chips solid?

Technine Stage 1 isn't that aggressive, so shouldn't be causing problems all of a sudden. As for the previous places you took it to, if they are replacing the MAF for the third time, they obviously have no clue what the problem is. Cam replacement is expensive though - I think I've read people paying $1000-$1500 for that job?

What is this motor vac/ decarbonizing the car thing? Never heard of it.

Some chip tuners modify the ECU in such a way that this test isn't possible...

Ok here is the deal upon inspection:

1: Car needs a new cam shaft and valves, bolts, seals. (a lot of metal flakes in engine). Lifters 1,2 and 4 are quite bad.
2: Clean out engine, drop oil pan.
3: The transmission will be removed in order to check the DMF as well (shop suspects it needs replacing). If the DMF does need replacing I hope that the new one will be the the new upgraded version. Old # 03G105266AP, New # 03G105266BE. Guess I should ask.
4: I will also be replacing the transmission oil, filter and seals.
5: Oh yeah I will be putting in Fuchs 507.00 oil and a new oil filter. (I assume this is a better oil than the 505?)

Reasonable prices anyone for this job(sssssssssss)

Expensive car = Expensive fix.

Blah............Pukes:eek:

Good news is that it will be fixed before any major damage was done.

Mike is a nice guy, however, if your shop is bringing your car there, i would be careful in this situation. My guess is that they broke something on your car and is now heading to the source on milvan for replacement. This has happened in the past, I deal with the source about 3 times a week. I have ears. you can never be too careful. Have a look around your car.
good luck

2005 golf tdi
probably the best car i ever had!
